I went to a friends friends studio today. I took a look around a thought one of his rooms, and told him it was really nice. Now I went into his pre-production room I was confused. He has an mpc ren, mpc studio, 2 mikro's (white/black), 2 maschine mk2's (black/white), and he mentioned he's getting the Maschine studio. I'm getting one also through zzounds. I was told he just loves collecting a whole bunch of gear, because it makes his place looks nice. He hasn't made a beat in a year or two I was told. Nonetheless I thought he had a dope set-up, but was confused with all the maschines.

My question is, and honestly do you guys make music with maschine consistently or do you just let it sit there???? Also, why do you think he has all those maschine's. Do you have a productions buddy's like that?

I do, I brought it specifically because I wanted a way to make beats without looking at a computer.

I don't personally know any one who would buy gear just to look at.

if i was filthy rich, then i would be like the owner of that studio - i would just love collecting gear. but i am not rich at all.

Maschine is always used for my music making, either with Ableton Live or Pro Tools. Komplete is also always used.

Fair enough having a few Maschines if you started on a Mk1 Mikro, then bought a Mk2 Maschine then will get a Studio Maschine.
But that's just pure gear lust/whoring having a black and white version of each. Style over substance I reckon - or more money than sense.
He sounds more of a collector rather a musician. Perhaps his place should be called a museum rather than a studio ;)

Don't hate me because I am beautiful and can use spare change to pick up new toys whenever the mood strikes.....:p

I have my primary pieces that I use daily to make music, teaching, testing, etc. I have some others that I don't use much. Being a nerd/geek...I like stay versed on the latest technology. So I often make impulsive buys to try things out for myself instead of window shopping or relying on another person's review. For the most part, I always buy new products as soon as they hit the streets if I am interested in them.

And there are plenty of musicians and engineers that have tons of stuff they don't always use. The 'gear collector' rants you hear in forums are mostly coming from those who are envious for one reason or another. Why even give a 2nd thought to what someone else spends their money on?

I do nearly as your friends (friends?).. I have hell of a lot of gear to be used when inspiration hits.. i'm not using the same angle from time to time.. sometimes it's only acoustic gear and E-drums, sometimes it's only Maschine MK1, Sometimes it's a blend of loops and VSTi's, sometimes only samplers.. i find it very exciting to have a lot of gear that inspires me to make music in a variety of ways and the limitations that comes with it.

I pre-ordered a white Maschine Studio ( got a response from the sales guys that it will land a day or 2 after launch..) will top the setup by far with the features i've seen, and the new tagging system that derived from Battery 4.. wow, this is going to be a SICKLY CREATIVE winter i tell you..

I use Maschine live in my DJ sets, as well as in my home studio. For this case I really would love to have two Maschine's, one for live playing out, and one that would just stay there in my studio.

And I mix and match really, sometimes I start a beat and just keep it within Maschine, and recently I've started using Maschine with Logic Pro, as a plugin. Works nice. Although I'm only Drag & Dropping 'Audio' from Masc to Logic, haven't set it all up so that I can Drag & Drop MIDI, looks complicated :(

I would like to have this much cool stuff, but I would never call Jack Joseph Puig a "gear collector":

In order to be a "gear collector", you have two meet two criteria. You must:
    - Have a lot of gear (perhaps including some which you rarely use), and
    - Not make any music with it.

You get bonus "gear collector" points for not making an effort to understand how to use the gear you've bought.

... The "ignore list" doesn't work so well when the NI forums don't keep me logged in. :(

You already know that Maschine is an integral part of my workflow with its own dedicated monitor. :)

I can see why gear collectors would be drawn to Maschine -- it's a very pretty piece of kit.

I've been using Maschine pretty heavily since I bought it 4 years ago. However, I bought at the Traktor S4 when it first came out and basically I had to put it back in the box because I never used it. Probably the only time i gave in to gear lust like that. I just had to have it, then when I got it I wish I hadn't.

Anyway, if you want to impress the average layman into thinking you are some super producer, get a couple Maschine's an UlraNova, a launchpad, and a mixer that has a lot of LEDs, that will make you look like the dude behind the console on starTrek and people like pretty lights. Real gear heads know, that a laptop, and a keyboard controller is probably all you realy need.

    +1

This is the motivation in the background of the mind of every gear collector.

    My path was:

    Bought Maschine MK1,
    Bought Maschine Mikro MK1,
Sold Maschine MK1 and Maschine Mikro MK1 to buy Maschine MK2.

Even though I don't travel when making music anymore, I'd still like to have a Mikro again if money was no concern. I love how great it feels as an instrument. Perfect size. Drumming in your lap feels great.

Funny thread. I deleted a couple of cheap shots at Jahrome because I think you guys are going overboard. I left the first in but no more personal attacks or you get infractions.

I make noise with it. The big attraction to me is not having to be chained to a keyboard and mouse. That is why I am super stoked about Maschine Studio. I believe it will free me even more, and therefore I will make more noise.....

did the og poster ever consider that he might run the project studio as a bizness so when he charges artists to come and use the equipment he has more equipment available to enable multiple artists to work at the same time?
