Just bough a Mk2 off a friend for cheap to have a play around with and wondered do i need to also buy the Maschine software? Would think they would come with each other. I already have NI's K11U if that helps

Then you have to ask your friend for the software, he has to unregister it and give you the serial. You cant buy it seperately.

the device serial number of the mk2 is tied to the registration serial number that will give you the software... if it was never reg'ed, and you cannot find the card, you may be able to contact NI and give them the physical serial number on the back of the unit and retrieve the registration hard/soft ware serial number. there are also serial number bar code stickers on the side of the product box, check there as well...

Have you tried to register the device serial?

no, the serial number on the device is not the registration code... try messaging or calling NI direct and give them the device number and tell them that you cannot find the one on the card. also, look on the side of the product box, it will be there as well with a bar code under it....

Did it come with 1.8 or lower...then YES you must buy update to Maschine 2 (2.x). NOBODY JUST COMES OUT AND SAY "THERE ARE OLD MK1 AND MK2 w 1.8 for 349.00 at Guitar Center.....Maschine 2.0 Software Update https://www.native-instruments.com/...ine-accessories/maschine-2.0-software-update/ $99 Capture 2.PNG This statement in Upgrades should let you know the problem/fix between Buying H/W and Software, and NI is trying to make them 1. I own Mikro came with 1.8, Massive, and early version of Komplete Select b4 it was 11 select bought KOMPLETE 9 and still don't understand the fix since all the updates and new releases. Bought 2.0 update $99, now ppl with new MK2 get 2.0 but my Mikro MK2 (COLOR PADS) don't qualify because it didn't come with Maschine 2 software...but I paid $99. Glad I own Komplete 9. And have the nerve to let Guitar Center sell ALL MK2 1.5,1.8,2.0 for $349+ and you still have to pay for 2.0 if it didn't come with it ... then why still sale Massive, Komplete 11 Select at same time "Single" https://www.walmart.com/ip/Native-I...4804458_10000001268&wl14=maschine mk2&veh=sem

i am glad i have 1.8... it runs great when i have to go legacy with 10.6 to open early cubase files....

... you stlll need to reg 1.8 before you can get the update to 2... if the original purchaser bought the unit after 2 came out and have a receipt from an authorized dealer, you can get 2. free... so talk to your friend and as well make sure it even ever had a reg/serial number... could have been an open box return and someone kept the serial number... guitar center was one of the few places that would have let you return maschine back then...

NI Didn't state that when I bought 2.0 up date. Or when they tried to deny Komplete 11 Select free update, because my MK2 was bought before a certain date....that what raised red flags on my whole H/W vs 2.0 Software issue. And still only upgrade/update apply to Maschine Hardware that came with 2.0 software. When they sent my free Komplete 11 Select I thought it would be because I owned previous Komplete Select (along with Mascine Hardware, and Komplete 9) But they sent me a Komplete 11 Select for Existing Maschine (that's how its label) wich they said I did not qualify for. You mean bought befroer 2.0 came out, right

No reason not to try it, download native access and give a go.

Personally, this software vs hardware license thing should be updated for older devices, IMO whoever registers the hardware should get the software.
This would make the used market much more simple, countless people get stuck with just the hardware which alone is just an overpriced generic controller.
