Well, i done a huge amount of pieces using the expander TG77 Yamaha, which is the expander of the SY77, then i would like to have perenity of my pieces in the future, by having a VSTi plugin version of this hardware synth of Yamaha. it contains ROM samples and some combinations with 4 AFM engines, or 2 PCM + 2 AFM or 1 PCM and 1 AFM, or just 1 AFM engine.

i hope to find in the future the emulation of this synth and to have the import capacity for SY/TG77 presets by MIDI, such as with FM7/8 for the DX7 presets.

Does Native Instrument think to make a future VSTi (FM99 for example) ?
...if not, could you say if someone has made it with Reaktor 5 with ripping of the exact samples datas of SY77 ?

    Welcome :)

I'd love to see a SY77/SY99 emulation myself sometime.
As to Reaktor emus, there's a couple that use roughly the same principle; search for Jonathan Leonard's SY100 in the user library.

You won't find an emu with the ROM data though. Ripping the ROM and using it in a SY77 emu would violate all international copyright laws; wave ROMS ARE covered by copyright laws.

    well,

I think you don't need the exact ROM PCM data to get a good working emulation, just a string-sample where the original string sample in the TG is located etc.

Look at the Terratec Komplexer; it seems to work great with only "almost" the same wavetables of the mQ...

I myself own a SY-99 and I still love it. It would be great to have at least an "almost-the-same" VST-Import-possibility (like "FM-99"....) !

So what about the 77/99 did you guys really like that couldn't be done with FM7 and a sampler? Honestly, very few yamaha and 3rd party content made for those really hammered the operator on sample or sample on sample modulation possibilities.

I think what made those keyboards so cool is the whole package...2 mod wheel, aftertouch, sensitive keys etc....the whole design was a nice fit. And I'm sorry if anyone thought FM was suck ass, those boards could make mean sounds. Its all what you program...

<kore>Practically, it would be trivial to make a reaktor ensemble that would take 2 STEREO inputs and perform FM on them with 2 input controls, self and cross feedback levels, and **** maybe some pitch shifting(and my style would be filters before feedback). In the kore environment, you could use this ensemble to process 2 stereo plugins like Kontakt2 and FM8. For class you could take martijn's approach with steampipe as inspiration for how the feedback could be modeled better than just multiplication for level control. Wouldn't that basically do it? I mean compared to the modulation/integration method in 77/99 between AWM and AFM sections: operator mode(osc/awm)? It was pretty basic really. In each op you use a waveform, or the total output of awm. I think you could do all this kore? So that would be 3 instruments in a kore sound: Kontakt2, Fm8, and Reaktor. Wow how do I do that in kore for stereo...ok screw that you can't have more than 2 inputs. But I highly doubt 7799 did stereo modulation - the ops of course were mono. So if you don't mind modulating just the left channels you could use kore...am I wrong? I mean bidule could do this easily right? A plugin with 4 inputs?</kore>

Crude approach for sure because a synth suited to this is better with wavetables, sample reversals and more dsp options than just FM. :) But with kore, you could make a performance preset list that captured all the connection settings between those 3.

    @ sleen:

of course, we can do (almost) anything we want with all these fantastic combinations of VST-synths some of us own....

I just want to make music. I'd like to use SY-99 or TG-77 Sounds with a VST in the pc, like I can use DX-Sounds in the FM7 / FM8 now.

Of course, it is not a must to have this feature and if You don't need it, fine.

For us, this would be a great feature.

when you write about copyrights laws for ROM from Yamaha, i think it is not a real problem, for 2 reasons :

    1. How they did make the FM7/8 ?

    2. did Native Instrument ask a license to Yamaha for FM7 ? Why couln't they do the same for SY77 ?

    3. i think of one Reaktor user, as the SY100 maker, could do the ...work with a SY/TG77 by resampling the ROM samples.

the really idea is to have the same music pieces made with SY/TG77, but in any studio with a VSTi version.

    4. Why don't Yamaha, Roland, and so on don't make, today, their owns VSTi instrument version of their 1980-1990 hardware synths ?
i think they could reach many real synth user for a "second buy" !

As many pieces composed on these synths, i am ready to buy immediatly the VSTi version of my synths !
