Awhile ago, I bought a 2nd hand Numark 4Trak. It came without the software, but that was no problem,as I already owned Traktor Pro 2. Now I'm thinking about selling the controller, but I would like to sell it with the free version of Traktor that normally comes with the controller. Is there somewhere where I can legally download it? Thx

For all enquiries regarding downloads please contact registration support.
My guess is that if the controller did not include software, NI will not provide it.

I've been doing some reading about the philosophy of NI only selling their software in combination with hardware like (their) own external soundcards or NI approved controllers/mixers (which become harder and harder to find as most of the hardware manufacturors are making the swith to Serato)) and I find it a strange way of doing business. They make it very complicated with all their different versions, downlaoding the correct versions from their website is difficult or even impossible if you don't own their hardware. Maybe I'm missing something here, but why don't they just sell their software seperately.

I owned a Pioneer Djm-T1 which came with Traktor scratch pro. I recently sold it, but I had to keep the Traktor software, because I bought the Pioneer DDJ-SZ and I wanted to keep on using Traktor,as I spend a lot of time gridding my tracklibrary. So I had to reduce my asking price, since the buyer had to order a new Traktor Scratch package with Timecode vinyl/cd's. Vinyl and Cd's he won't need, because I gave him mine that came with the Pioneer DJM-T1.

With their way op operating, NI puts a curse on the 2nd hand market. Why not keep it simple, make 1 "all-in-one" software package that comes with the hardware AND can be bought seperately too. In my eyes, what NI is doing, concentrating on the producer side, is a mistake. Sure, there are people who want to use Machine etc in their set, but most of us just want to play the tunes they download from ITunes, Beatport, rip from their cd's, etc. Back in da days, not every dj wanted to be a scratch dj, and I feel like NI is pushing dj's into becoming the modern version of scratch dj's.

NI do sell Traktor Pro separately: http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/traktor/dj-software/traktor-pro-2/

They don't always sell with hardware. Traktor Scratch Pro is sold with hardware but you can but the Certified Timecode package for the same price as Traktor Pro (link above) and use that with a Certified mixer such as your DJM-T1 (I also own a T1) so you could have sold the whole DJM-T1 package and simply re-bought the Timecode upgrade package.

That was your choice. As I said above you could have bought the Timecode package which gives you TSP and the new MK2 timecode for the same price as the basic Traktor Pro software.

NI have absolutely no responsibility to preserve a 2nd hand market. Many users have multiple serial number as Traktor Pro comes FREE with certain NI controllers. Traktor Pro is still the flagship NI DJ software - users can choose to upgrade to the scratch version as they choose. There is no pressure to have Pro or Scratch Pro either way.

Your view that NI is concentrating on the production side is very shortsighted and probably based on the last 2 years of NI output.
NI has lead the DJ software field for nearly 10 years and certainly the last 10 years with a plethora of controllers and many many more updates to Traktor than Serato and Virtual DJ combined.

The perceived 'quiet time' of the last 2 years has come after 5 years of incredible output. All the controllers since 2009's first X1 have come in the last 5 years: X1, F1, S4, S2, Z2, Z1 and then the MK2 versions not to mention the Audio 2, 4, 6, 10 and the software updates from Traktor Pro 1 to Pro 2 have all come in the last 5 years (Traktor Pro 2008).

The bottom line is if you didn't get any software with a second hand item then you can buy it again. NI have no responsibility to provide free software.

The free version that is usually bundled with 3rd party hardware is actually Traktor Pro LE. The LE version is not available to buy and it is not legal to sell separately it is an FREE evaluation version of Traktor.

You still would need the serial number that was printed on the disk that came with the 4Trak. As Karlos said, it was kind of a version of LE... specifically "Traktor ME Numark 4trak Edition" with limited effects, but with 4 deck capability (LE only has 2 decks). It still requires registration through the Service Center though, and (if previously registered) would have to be transferred when you sold the 4trak.
