dumb question about erasing the unwanted

have a sample laid out on 4 pads
hit record and start putting phrases down
If I don't like how say pad 1 sounded played in my pattern, how do I erase that pad?

I tried select, shift and clear, and that cleared all my samples playing the pattern
I tried select, shift/erase and the pad, and that erases all my samples playing the pattern as well

Same thing for patterns,
If I have 3 patterns in, and want to remove a sound on one of my groups, how do I just remove that sound?
I keep losing my patterns.

nvrmind.. figured it out.. shift and erase clears the pad for all patterns, only erase and pad clears the current pattern.
