I would like to have a nice DX7 Piano playable (as an alternative to Alicias Keys, Mark I an Vintage Organs by NI I already own) on the "Computer Musical Instrument" I built using an embedded PC, Audio 6, and Kore 5.

Of course FM8 is great, but to use this, I would need an additional Hosting software (such as Forte) to remote-control the complete setup via Midi program change messages, and for me, the price of FM8 (even if taking advantage of a special offer) is too high just for the limited use I have for it.

Thus a decent Kontakt sample library would be best.

In fact I did find a nice sounding free sample Library in the Internet, but same needs (the payed version of) SampleTank and is not offered in different formats. So this is a nogo for me.

Can such a library converted to Kontakt 5 format or does anybody know something suitable ?

You already have a DX7 Piano patch in Kontakt Factory Library: Vintage/Digital Machines/DX7 EP.nki

    I don't find "Vintage/Digital Machines/DX7 EP.nki"

Is the "Kontact Factory Library" not included in the "Players" edition that is used to drive the other NI products I bought ?

I did install the "Kontact Factory Selection". Is this something different ?

Ah, if you're just using Kontakt Player, that's indeed different. Kontakt Factory Selection is just a small part of the full Kontakt factory library that comes with the full version of Kontakt.

... And here the same holds that I said about buying FM8: Of course it would be really nice to have, but regarding the very limited use I have for the additional sounds (on top of the three really excellent NI sample libraries I have, the price is much to high for me.

BTW, besides the missing "Factory Library", wjat is the difference between "Kontakt" and "Kontake Player" ?

    Thanks again,
    -Michael

Google is your friend. Google ‘free DX7’ VSTi or ‘free DX7 patch for Kontakt’ (no quotes) and you will find what you are looking for.

I do know DX7 VSTIs (I even did have a decent discussion with someone who provides one), but those can't seem to provide low latency and thus are not suitable are not for life playing.

Of course I already did google free 'DX7 patch for Kontakt' but this only sowed the said "Sample Tank only" thingy.

This is not true - it all depends on which audio interface drivers you're using (ASIO provides low latency, but it depends on your audio interface if it's capable of supporting such low latency).

Thanks a lot for this hint.

Right now I have a rather old and cheap USB interface.

I am up to purchasing the NI Audio 6 interface which is rumored to provide a good latency (not as low as with RME, but those are much more expensive).

I'll retry those VSTis once I have the I/O box.

In fact I need a VST Host for using VSTis in the "live" environment I am setting up. I plan to purchase Forte for this, anyway. They do have a fully functional trial version.

In fact the VSTi I decently tested was done based on the "SynthMaker" tool kit ( http://www.synthmaker.co.uk/about.html ). I learned that same is not done with live playing in mind, but for using the products in DAWs.

On the system I tested the FM Synth on and here was not able to provide decent latency, the NI FM8 VSTi did work nicely.

I've no problem using JP6K, which is a SynthMaker made plugin, both in DAW and playing with low latency. It's all about the ASIO drivers - plugins themselves do not limit you to just one type of usage (DAW usage or live playing). Don't be misguided.

    Michael,

It sounds like FM8 is your best bet. There are a number of DX7 banks for it on the Internet and many are free. I have the FM8 and it is my go to DX7 sound source.

Of course FM8 is my favorite. I did play with the demo and really loved it. The full version is supposed to be able to import my old DX7 and TX216 sounds (I have sysex files). Unfortunately FM8 is one of the more expensive NI products :(

Save up and get Komplete when it's on sale, then. You'll get all the synths in their full version glory and tons of patches to play with. :)

I bought a DX Piano rather inexpensive library and it really sounds great and is wonderfully playable with m master keyboard.

Unfortunately when loading it, it only plays in "Demo mode" and stops after 15 minutes and thus is not usable for me :(

Seems like a hoax. I wrote to the producer...

Yes, that's the case with all 3rd party Kontakt libraries). You need a full version to open those without the 15 minutes limit - only licenced Kontakt Player libraries will open in the free Kontakt Player. Developers always state this requirement, it is not a hoax.

"Inexpensive" means not Kontakt Player library - Kontakt Player libraries are never below $79, with rare exceptions (Sonic Reality Infinite Player being $49).

    Like "Factory selection"...

Of course this is a hoax !!

The name "Kontakt Player" very obviously suggests that same is able to play any ready-made sample libraries, while the full version additionally can be used to create those libraries.

Similarly the Windows media player can play media content while it cant generate it.

    http://www.native-instruments.com/e...-5-player/overview/kontakt-player-vs-kontakt/

in the second field from top for "player" shows two green and one red symbol.

    the green are: labeled
    - Plays back Instruments Powered by KONTAKT and
    - 3rd party KONTAKT PLAYER instruments

The label Text for the red cross is
    - missing

This should read "Any normal 3rd party KONTAKT instruments"

So seemingly nobody is supposed to know what Kontakt player does not play.

The situation is perhaps a bit confusing, but the way it should have been displayed on the NI website is this:

    > Instruments Powered by KONTAKT (check)

    > 3rd party KONTAKT PLAYER instruments (check)

    > unlicenced libraries (X)

In any case, this is no hoax.

"Factory Selection" is made by NI and is just a taster of what's in Kontakt's full factory library - why would that be charged when it's just a small subset of factory content?

"Unlicensed libraries" is too high, it's not on level with the red X. Layout mistake on the website.

But this happened to us all the first time, I think. If you don't have Kontakt you need to check if an instrument is Kontakt PLAYER compatible. And if you have Kontakt 4, you need to check if an instrument is Kontakt 4 compatible because Kontakt 4 can't open patches for Kontakt 5. And Kontakt PLAYER instruments that have been released while Kontakt 5 was out can't be opened in Kontakt 4, even if they were built in Kontakt 4. That part really stinks, it forces you to upgrade.

It's not a scam, it would be a bad business model to make one of the most advanced pieces of sampler software available for free. NI makes money with every "Kontakt PLAYER" instrument on the market. UVI does the same thing.
