The button labelled “free” or “sync” at the top of the screen is not described in the manual and does not seem to do anything! I assume it might set whether an envelope re-triggers when another key is pressed. Please could someone tell me what this button is supposed to do?

As it stands there is no way of controlling whether an envelope, such as a filter envelope, retriggers when a patch is set to monophonic, which is what the button might be intended for. If a monophonic bass patch is programmed with glide it is useful to be able to choose whether the envelope re-triggers when a note is held down and a second note is pressed. The lack of control over envelope re-triggering limits Absynth’s ability to produce classic monophonic leads and basslines.

It is the tempo sync button, BUT I can not find it! Where is it?

Top left of the envelope window, next to the bypass button.

This sync/free button determines if the selected envelope should sync to the tempo. If the envelope is set to free, then the scale of the envelope won't change when the tempo's changed. If the envelope is set to sync, then the envelope will automatically scale to the current tempo. Here's a quick summary of which envelopes can be synced or free:

Sustain, Release, Loop envelopes: synced or free

    Retrigger: can only be synced

Link: inherits characteristic of parent envelope

Control Driven: can be neither synced nor free, since it's not time based.

    Hope that helps!

Ahaa! Each envelope must be edited and set to sync. First I must select envelopes to be displayed from the envelope list. Then I have to select an envelope for editing in the graphic display! And, off course, thats when the free/sync button show up. Haleluja, brothers and sisters!

If you're creating a rhythmic loop patch, you probably are using retrigger envelope mode. Loop mode can work too, but retrigger is much easier for that kind of thing. And retrigger is automatically synced, so no fuss.

Yes, it is possible to control whether an envelope is "legato" or always retriggers. release envelope mode always retriggers, sustain always plays legato if poly = 1.

There is a tutorial on envelopes in the files section of the Yahoo Absynth Users forum. It dates from Absynth 1, so it doesn't cover many new features, but it's still useful. I think this is mentioned in the manual too...

    Cheers,
    Brian
