Because I lost 2 days and nights to find the answer (in fact the answer is buried somewhere on NI's site), I decided to share this. A bunch of other people seem to have a similar problem.

    Problem description:
While the Z1 sound card seems to route the sound correctly and LED meters seem to work, literally none of the buttons and faders seem to control the corresponding ones in the Traktor 2 software (it doesn't matter whether LE or Pro version is in use).
This problem remains after the following steps have been taken, described here:
    https://support.native-instruments....AKTOR-Controller-is-Not-Recognized-by-TRAKTOR

    Solution:
The answer to the problem is hidden at the top of the article:
    https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/210264225

In plain old English: from the root level of your system hard drive i.e. "Macintosh HD" go to > Library > Audio > Plug-Ins > HAL and remove 3rd party Plugins (these programs may not work as expected thereafter - so copy these plug-ins to another directory (folder) and/or make a Time Machine backup before).

You DO NOT have to delete the following Plug-ins from the HAL directory as they don't cause the problem (confirmed):
    - AirPlay.driver
    - AppleAVBAudio.driver
    - AppleTimeSyncAudioClock.driver
    - BluetoothAudioPlugIn.driver
    - iSightAudio.driver

In my example, what screwed my setup were the following Plug-ins:
    - Hear.plugin
    - EcammAudioLoader.plugin

Additionally, the article also specifically mentions the following Plug-ins inside the HAL directory (folder) to be known trouble makers and therefore should be removed (make a backup of them for later use if you need them with other Apps):
    - Avid CoreAudio.plugin
    - RazerAudio.plugin
    - SoundBunny.plugin
    - Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin

Hope this helps some people ...
