well it seems they are two quite different synths, one problem i am having at the moment is programming pad sounds on the FM7 or sweeping pads for that matter! They always seem to sound very similar, has anyone got any tips for creating these or even willing to post me a few examples i could load into the fm7?
    Cheers,

ok,its in-general easier to make sounds on the p52, or subtractive is more easy/faster than fm..

but use the ENV to make some real nice pads.. especially keep the sus-level modded!!.. so it will keep a "living" texture.. just like the subtractive pads.. and better!! much better!!..

first maybe try someting with those parallel ops.. and one op above.. so

then set some "quite round"-frequency.. and something harmonic.. as modulator..

set those ENVs to form some "LFO" / loops..

    experiment with it..!!

Another quite simple method to make a pad sound move is setting a small offset between carrier and modulator frequency.
Letting a fixed frequency operator (it's fixed when ratio is 0 and only only offset is set) modulating carrier and modulator at a low frequency with different mododulation amounts (levels) can be an even better method bring some motion into a sound.
Also programming a controller to change the color of the sound can be quite rewarding to make it sound less static...

Simple answer to this debate.Try Absynth.Great sounds, capable of analogue and digital sounds plus wavestation like noises, worth checking out.

    got both..

fm is completely different, so you might find lots of nice sounds for both without having much "doubles" ;))

Just a quick but late point regarding how difficult it is to do PWM in FM7.

start by initiating the edit buffer, turn on operator F to 100 (into the OUT) with a square wave (ie wave 4), modulated by E by about 55 using wave 27. Set LFO1 rate to about 10, and turn the junction to 100 between LFO1 and E in the Modulation Matrix.

I think this would give a pretty good PWM simulation using just 2 operators.
