Hi, I cannot find data on this, maybe because I am searching wrong? Forgive me if I post a question which has already been answered.

FM8 as a vocoder: in Pro Tools, I can set up an Instrument track and put Kontakt, then FM8 as inserts A and B, respectively. Then I set up a MIDI track, and route the MIDI output to both (ctr+click to route the second one IN ADDITION to the first). Now I have the Kontakt string library playing, and the sound shows up in the "IN" box of my FM8 synth. Evil laughter follows as I modulate my oscillators with string samples >:D

HOWEVER: I cannot find any way to do this in LOGIC! So far, I set up an instrument track and I put Kontakt on it. Then I can put FM8 as a plug-in on that instrument track. Audio shows up in my "IN" terminal, but I can't figure out how to route MIDI to it! Of course, I could put FM8 in a new instrument track, but then I couldn't get the audio out of Kontakt to go into it..

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

can you tell us what preset you used in FM8? As far as I know FM8 is not a vocoder, there are no analyser and synthesiser sections that are necessary for a vocoder.

perhaps vocoder is not the right term for what I'm doing - but it comes down to having audio show up in the "in" box in FM8, and using that audio to modulate oscillators or run it through formant oscillators with a ratio of 0, and mixing these into the original sound by sending "in" to "out" at whatever ratio.

I've figured it out, though. FM8 gets inserted as a new instrument track, and then get the audio with the side chain box in the upper right-hand corner. The MIDI of course comes from the instrument track.

you can modulate oscillators (or, as they are called, operators) with audio input? This is entirely new to me, please tell me more about it, and post your presets!

What's wrong with having two vocoders? ;-)

It can be done - Logic's sidechain doesn't accept Audio Instrument inputs though. You have to load FM8 as an AU rather than a plugin, send Kontakt's output to a bus, and then choose that bus for FM8's sidechain input.

    Hope that helps!

FM8fx (the effect plugin rather than the VSTi) is just a fully featured FM8, in which the IN operator functions as input. You can route whatever signal to FM8's effect processors that way, or - indeed - modulate some operators. You can also use FM8fx operators to modulate the incoming signal. Naturally you can play with this FM8fx too if you connect your MIDI keyboard to it through the MIDI routing of your DAW. As such you could play a melody with some FM8 instance, and play a C note with an FM8fx instance and let the melody (including its effects!) modulate the C of FM8fx. Put differently: you could have a short decaying sound with maximum reverb time modulate a sine wave. The possibilities are endless.

You can see here how I use one FM8fx instance as a compressor, with the ducking being controlled manually by me through a midi controller (MIDI learn).
