has anyone built a formant synth in reaktor? I'm looking for some ideas...

I tried building a FOF oscillator from the description in _the computer music tutorial_, but that didn't go so well.

All the other software I've used has formant oscillators or filters built in.

Can you fake it with bandpass filters?

Yes. I am actually considering this myself. You'll need at least 5 filters, but the more the merrier ;)

The basic idea is running several bandpass filters in parallel and controlling each band's amplitude individually. I am actually thinking that it will be better to construct them by using LP and HP filters running in series so you can better control the width of each band. Not sure if 4 poles will be enough though.

I'd like to hear more on this from those with more theoretical knowledge.

I think there are some in the user lib.

vox-humana is a cool synth which mimics the human voice,
maybe you want something like that.
also you can check out my vocalx-fx ensemble,
it is some kind of formant filter, maybe it is useful to you
when you are looking for certain formant frequencies to use
    them in your own creations.

    best wishes

    Hi Ingo

Is your ensemble in the user library? I would be interested in hearing it too.

vocalx fx was made for reaktor 3, it might be
a bit buggy on reaktor 4.
anyway, you can download a version which should
work fine in reaktor 4 here:

    Hi Ingo

I've downloaded it and it appears to work with no problems.

It really is quite superb - on similar grounds to Vox Humana, but with a different take on things.

    Fantastic!

I look forward to hearing your track on Reaktions.com just as soon as I get my broadband connection on Wednesday

    Thanks!
I plan a new polyphon version of the mixture trautonium and a trautonium with new features and new ideas next months.

Also you may want to look into the wavesat oscillators. There are some useful formant waveforms in the wavesets.

I shall be posting a new waveset synth this week, I hope.

Check out "Sparky" when I get around to posting it to the library.

The waveset synth is called Heidegger. For formants:

    1. Turn all the oscillator modulations to their zero (centered) position, or turn all oscillator source list boxes to OFF.

    2. Maks sure the range bars (sliders round the XY panels) are as long as they can be.

    3. Move the oscillator XY crosshair up and dwon. You will seee some nmaes change on the left, the set beginning with "vowel" are formants.

    4. Move the XY crosshair left and right to modify the formant characteristics.
