Ok I am new to the DJ'ing scene. I was on another forum and looking for DJ gear and was told to get Final Scratch 2. Well I did that, however I dont have any other gear.
So I would like to know do I need the cd players (looking at Dennon DNS-3500) or is just using the .mp3's on my hard drive sufficent to do mixing? Or do I need to purchase a mixer as well? Now I have read a little on DJ Studio 3, does this eliminate the need for a real mixer?
I am looking at possibly dj'ing clubs, parties and weddings. So any advice is greatly appreciated along with suggestion's on gear if I need it.

    Thanks

If you get a midi controller setup you can DJ directly off your hard drive... If you want to use CD players to control FS2 make sure you get a player that has vinyl emulation. And of course the other option is turntables. With the CD player and turntables you'll most likely want to get an external mixer.

Now in regards to the midi setup? What would I need? Are you referring to a Midi keyboard? Or referring to a sound card that has midi capabilities.....Curious to what others are using with FS. Not sure if I was mislead, but I was told that with FS and Traktor DJ you could do everything from the comptuer and no need for additional equipment besides the speaker system. I am ready to invest in the Dennon DNS-3500 and a mixer if neccessary.

    Thanks

Question: Do you have TraktorFS2 (the the FireWire ScratchAMP) or TraktorDJ Studio?

These are 2 different products based on a common software platform. The major differance is that FS is controled via timecoded CD's or vinyl and TDJS is controled/mixed and manipulated in software (this can be via FS control or Midi)

Now if you only have FS. Then you will need a DJ mixer and at least 1 DJ CD player or vinyl turntable to control the software.

If you just want to mix on you PC/Mac then you will need TDJS along with a sound card with 2 stereo outputs...

I have FS2 with the scratch box. Now if I can just use Studio DJ 3 with a soundcard, than that would be alot cheaper than purchasing 2 cd decks and a mixer. However I think I may want to end up doing gig's at local bars/clubs and possibly weddings. Is there alot of you that just use your laptop for everything? It seems as if it would be a little hard to do all the controlling with the mouse/keyboard compared to having a real mixer. I just need to know the best route before I go spend 3500.00

I think you may have bought FS2 before knowing enough about the system and your options.

By the sounds of things you would have been better off just buying Traktor DJ Studio, a multi channel sound card and a MIDI controler like the X-Session (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/XSession-main.html) or FaderFox (www.faderfox.de) to control the software.

Many user on this forum only use their computer and a midi controler to DJ and never use "real" gear. They play live in club, bars, weddings, events and more. But they use Traktor DJ Studio, not FS2.

With FS2 you have to have "real" gear to control it. That is the only option. That is how the system was designed.

If you have already bought and paid for FS2 and can't return it then you could look at buying Traktor DJ Studio and using the FS2 ScrachAMP as your sound card. I think NI were offering a special price on Traktor for FS2 owners (I might be mistaken). Then you would need a way to control the software. The FaderFox of the X-Sessions would be perfect partners. This way you could use FS2 with CD/vinyl control when you have access to "real" gear, and use TDJS when you don't.

    Hope that helps.

Adamtf> Yeah I was originally told alot of dj's use both the gear and the pc side. I did go out and buy alot of the cd decks dennon dn-3500 and the B-52 matrix 1000's. However I held off on the Pionner 600 mixer and going to order the Ecler NUO4 mixer....from the reading it sounds like the mixer to get because of the midi hookup. I just hope I dont find myself using the mixer and the mp3's off the computer, Final DJ 2.6 and not using the dennon's and FInal Scratch because than I just wasted about 2K.
However if not I guess I will have a nice looking setup and if I do clubs and wedding's, looks like I would have a back up if the computer ever went down.
