Maschine could take a page from REAPER's playbook and introduce a fairly interesting feature:

    It's called:

    (Drum roll please...)

    Preferences.

For example, it wouldn't break anyone's workflow to create a preference checkbox titled:
    "Use Old-Style Step-Sequencing".

It would solve the problem for the guy in the other thread who wants to transfer his 2.0 license because the new step sequencer broke his workflow.

What's wrong with the new step sequencer? It's the same, except you actually see the steps with velocities, which is not bad.

I don't remember exactly what his issue was. I personally liked having two tweakable "fixed velocity" settings in 1.8.2, but the new way it works is pretty cool as well. It's an even break with a a slight edge to 2.x in my mind, but the guy in that thread preferred the old style so much that he wanted to get rid of 2.x.

NI has always been very light on preferences in their designs. I wish they'd hire one of the REAPER crew to show 'em that you CAN please everyone sometimes.

Preferences and extensions are a great way to do this, but we'll see whether Maschine becomes an extensible and customizable platform or not. I'm gonna guess "no" on both counts.

Here's what a powerful "Preferences" page looks like, for those who don't have one:

the new step sequenzer is absurdly. patternmenu must be arranged stable like this 16sound view . The pattern must have a complete view.

It def ain't the same. The right hand screen in 1.8 has a step/sound scroller... Kinda hard to explain but WAY better workflow. I seem to be the only one that uses it though! :)

@ Salem Beats... Thanks for the positivity but it seems like they made an accurate judgement that their user base would be happy with the changes. I can't imagine why anyone needs to see the velocity of the hits on the screen, but no biggie, I'm done.

    Peace

Yeah, I actually like both of the step sequencers. It's a toss-up for me as to which one I like more, and I actually use the step sequencer quite a bit for hats in trap-style productions.

The new Step Sequencer has a "follow" mode which allows the step sequencer to follow the play cursor, making the step scroller a little less important.

Regardless of my personal preference, I'd like to see NI's design and development team start using preferences for these kinds of things -- they're going to need to if they want to enter the big leagues and compete. The only other "DAW" I've seen that is as spartan on preferences is Reason.

2.0 still has the step scroller on the right hand screen: http://distilleryimage5.ak.instagram.com/45e608fe2fa411e3abce22000a1f96d4_8.jpg

So are you guys talking about something else or the scroller?

Well, I'm not sure about the scroller -- that was someone else's thing. I really like the new step sequencer overall.

The thing I liked about the step sequencer in 1.8.2 was the set of two fixed velocities -- one "full velocity" (which didn't need to be "full") and one "half velocity" (which didn't need to be "half").

Anyway, that's what this is about -- PREFERENCES. Everyone has slightly different preferences, and you can please everyone by porting some old code and including a check mark deep in the PREFERENCES menu. As I mentioned earlier, the only production environment I've come across with as few preferences as Maschine is Reason.

With the 1.8 setup you could move through each piece of your kit, and set the steps for that particular sound.... now you have to jump over to select and all the sound titles are truncated... Totally different workflow.

Anyway, I don't want to go on and on. It would be great if there was a preference for this!

Oh god no! No one wants that mess. Sorry but Reaper is not what i would use as an example of good design. Sure it has a lot of preferences but it's also a big ol mess because of it. I'd rather NI put in sane well thought out preferences, instead of throwing the kitchen sink at the problem. Powerful and too lazy to actually design something useful are two different things imo. Anyway Reaper rant over.
