Akai originally had the software tied to the hardware.
If the hardware wasn't attached the software would revert to demo mode.

Like I said that is not my experience, and if you contact them, you can sort out most variations on this.

    Hey dreddiknight:
You seem like you can help me sort this out. I have used an MK2 for years, but its falling apart and they're asking too much for repair work. Have found several deals on used MK2s and MK3s. Seems to me I just have to get the seller to transfer the license to my account and I should be ok. That sound right?

Also- met an AKAI guy who was gifted a MK3 he wants to offload. Problem is that its a NFR (not for resale) model. I'm thinking I should stay away- what do you think?

an NFR Mk3 is just like a regular Mk3. No need to worry.

Why's that then, if the licence is registered it can't be transferred

Yeah, seems likes a NFR model can't have the license transferred. A bit worrying.

If you already have a license for your old mk2 , a replacement second hand mk2 without a license would still work , a mk3 should work too but not sure how it would work if you wanted to sell it if you can't register it , tho you could sell it without software etc.
The newer models mk3 and jam are tied to the software serial , but the older models still have a separate code for the hardware, software, and library (well the studio did )

There are account tricks you can do...
If that person doesn't own anything else from NI he can just give you his account, you would then change the email and pass and transfer what you own to that new account that is now yours and there.. problem solved. If he has more NI products than he can transfer everything else he owns to a new account and then give your his account... Not sure if I'm breaking any rules by saying this, I think not.

If the price is really nice I would find a way to make it work, just think a bit about it, it's not that hard to come up with a solution.

as i understand it, you have to register the hardware with the mk3 and newer model to your account to get your serial numbers generated, so the hardware and software are all linked in that way just like when you register your komplete serial and it gives you all the individual product serials.... so you have to register the main product to get the individual serial numbers and in the case of maschine, the hardware is the main product.. i never registered my mk3 and just used the mk1 software. so if i want to sell my mk3, i can sell it as never registered, no need to transfer. an alternative for someone is to just buy a micro unit for the software an use that with a studio or mk3...
