I'd posted this on Garys' forum and we thought it might be appropriate to pose this question here.

I'm just wondering about this and I know it seems to be true as GPO works better on a PC right now. But why? I mean is this inherently the case? I don't know anything about it, but since there is a Windows and a Mac version isn't each version "optimized" for that platform? Apparently Giga cannot be written for the Mac. So maybe NI cannot write for the Mac either.... except they are? and it's not working to well at this point.

So I guess I'm wondering can it ever work as well as on a PC? or should all us Mac guys accept reality and go over to the dark side?

Any programmers out there want to shed a little light?

    Cheers

Thanks Rob, but I was actually hoping for some solid info from a programmer type. (I now realize that this could easily turn into a Mac vs PC thread but please, don't go there)

For me I guess the bottom line is: If it'll work well on a Mac in a while (say 6 months or so) I'm probably not saving myself any time by going out and getting (and learning how to run) a PC. If it'll never run well on a Mac I'm getting a PC right now.

Thanks guys, but doesn't anyone else have an opinion about NI and OSX? I can barely believe it. Everybody on a Mac is happily using GPO or Kontakt or Absynth without any problems? This little hangup with OSX and NI is stopping me from being able to work. I already gave up on GPO (for a while) and decided to try to get some material together in the electronica realm. Guess what? Crash city.

About the only thing I can do in OSX is strum my acoustic guitar and that is SO retro.

Kontakt's disk streaming isn't up to it. It also spits back little pieces of buffers or something. Most annoying.

I could go on and on but I won't. I'm just trying to figure out why you guys are so silent? Have you just given up, gone back to OS9 or already switched over to PC?

Spectrasonics works without a hitch. Reason too.

I know dcornutt is right. It's all about market share and allocating resources. So I'm thinking it's about time to heed the writing on the wall and get the hell out of Dodge.

    Aaaaaargh!

C'mon NI. Let's hear some facts. How about a little honesty. It's been quite a while since you started writing for OSX. What's the problem?

There is a new Kontakt update on its way shortly that features improved DFD. I would assume that the Kontakt Player (for GPO) will also be updated. The Kompakt Player (for the EastWest libraries) was just released yesterday.

Ok David, but you're still avoiding the real issue. Kontakt, GPO, Absynth etc. does not work as well on a Mac as it does on a PC. You yourself admit this on Motu-Mac and at least one spokesperson for NI admits that the only way to deal with this at this time is to either get used to it, go back to OS9 (which wasn't that great, frankly) or buy a PC.

The truth is coming out little by little. I think NI should do everyone a favor and make a statement to this effect. We know anyway. It's just that now we can't trust NI to speak the truth.

How is that good for business?

Well, to be blunt, I don't work for NI (I only volunteer here as a moderator) so I can say objective things that an NI employee may not be able to say, such as an observation that PC versions run smoother or more efficient than their Mac counterparts. That is sometimes/generally true of NI products, but that's solely my opinion and should not be taken as a company opinion or direction.

The bigger issue here is that it really is impossible to compare apples to apples -- excuse the pun. PC's and Macs are two completely different designs, even though they are engineered to achieve the same end result. The situation is always changing. Yesterday I read news that the same G5 chips that power Macs will now be used to power Xboxes, which means there'll be much more advances in the chip design in the future...who knows where we'll be in five years...

NI are pursuing both platforms, and as a company, that's all I expect them to acknowledge.

Thanks for replying. I realize that you don't speak for NI. The thing is, an employee IS quoted in an email saying that, indeed, Kontakt, et al runs more smoothly and with a LOT more voices on a PC.

    So this is fact.

I'm just saying I think we, the buying public, would be a lot better off if NI simply acknowledged this publicly.

This way an informed decision is possible.

OK, guess I'll drop this now since not too many people seem concerned.

Well, as I mentioned elsewhere, an NI employee may have said it, but I think NI would not want that to be their official customer policy, which is probably why the original thread was yanked (my guess).

The upcoming Kontakt update will offer significant improvements for Mac DFD. My understanding is that NI really wants both their Mac and PC versions to be equally capable, so if one lags behind, they will work to improve it. You can't promise perfection when comparing apples and oranges (pardon the pun) but I don't think it's NI's intention to make their Mac versions second-class.

    ...

    Hi,

Yesterday I have launch the SOSTRING stand alone on my G4 / 533 MP MAC OS X
My G5 2x2 was playing thru midi my test song "from the new world" of Anton
    D.

    I can play only 3 tracks (2 violin, 1 viola) on the G4 :(
If I add the cello I get a loud noise and no more sound.
Is there is a way to reset the SOSTRING.

There is a problem on fast passage playing one note at a time, I get up to
64 note simultaneously, there is something to fix there !

I do not want to do comparison with other Librarys but NI has to work really
hard ! May be they could hire the programmer of Emagic that wrote the DFD
    for the EXS24.

The other solution is to have an EXS24 version. There is the possibility to
protect sample copy adding a plug-ins in the EXS24 and having an
    authorisation code on the HSKey

    Thanks in advance.

    Best regards
