Faithful GR user for 4 years now...

as far as the new cab/mic interface in AT3, the amp modeling (perhaps with the exception of the new GR4 marshalls, those sound damn good), and the amount and accuracy of the stompboxes

    GR just got served
Hopefully they're ready for a good return...

Back in Oct 2006 I suggested something on this forum a lot like the cab/mic interface in AT3...

Maybe NI will develop a mic/cab interface which is a matrix of modified impulses like AT3 but with the option of a z-axis where you can change the angle of the mic as well as its position in relation to the speaker (hint, hint)

Completely and totally owned. Thankfully, the Rig Kontrol works with Amplitube. may not ever come back to GR.

A couple of years ago there was a group buy on a pile of Amplitube plugins for next to no money. (Something on the order of $40 for Amplitube + the Hendrix expansion and maybe one other product.) At the time I didn't want to get distracted and I stuck with GR, but I'm kicking myself now for not having gotten in on the upgrade pricing path.

Does Amplitube still require a USB key? That's about the only thing that gives pause - it's a considerable inconvenience if you've got a laptop with 2 USB ports.

    Nope.

Wish I had been in during that group buy too... however, i don't regret the purchase yet. The bass amps alone are worth the price. The Mic/Cab implementation is a great bonus. In my opinion, NI has a lot of catching up to do.

It did not get owned :)

AT3 is better than its predecesser.

BUT they did not evolve like NI. The are not even close to the smoothness and transparency of the new GR4 marshalls. The new GR4 ones are in the same league as the axe-fx. AT3 is just bit better than the other AT products, nothing to hype about.

So big congrats to everyone at NI, you did it!

As far as tone goes, it's all preference really. Sure, IK and NI have amp sims that sound closer to the actual thing, but whose to say which sounds better? Who can say that the original amp is the best sound?

What I'm interested in (since I'm using a computer for my guitar effects) is flexibility and control. If I was a real tone freak, I'd get the real thing. I want to be able to do things that you can't do with real gear (practically). I also want no limits to what I can imagine. Amplitube doesn't appeal to me because of the restrictions it places on routing and number of effects. With GR I can do insane things like reverb before distortion or "what would every modulation at once sound like?". there are also more practical things like two amps at once each with their own wah and delay.

in the tone category, its user preference. I prefer GR's tone
    in flexibility, GR wins
    in controllability, GR wins
    in stability - neither?

yea, you can do some "unreal" stuff with Guitar Rig and its definetly a nice thing.. I think if we thought of them as video games, Guitar Rig would be Arcade where-as Amplitube is a Simulation and that's what turned me on about it :D

anyway, I still havent tried it yet so everything that i've said might change :p Im goin to pick up my guitar from the shop now. I'll review later :)

I have both GR4 and Amplitude 3. Previously I had GR4 and Amplitude 2. In my view they are complimentary. However, I have noticed in the past few months, a tendency to load Amplitude 2 instead of GR4. This could possibly be a simple matter of personal preference.

I have not had enough time to really look at Amplitude 3 so I cannot comment on it.

It seems to me that as guitarists we are very lucky to have both programs to choose from.

I don't see this as a competition between products. To me the more the merrier.

Now for my current project? Will it be GR or Amplitude? Maybe both? Decisions........decisions. :D

    Regards John

I can't speak about AT3 but I own Guitar Rig 2 and Amplitube 2. Guitar rig is my go to software. Amplitube 2 is a PC resource hog and I have never pulled an acceptable metal tone out of it. Guitar Rig doesn't seem to use even half as much pc power and the metal tones are pretty good with only minor tweeks. I didn't find the youtube of AT3 that impressive really. And the idea of having to buy expansion packs pisses me off. Guitar Rig just works. You buy and you get all of it. Amplitube wants to keep upselling you the metal pack and the fender pack and .....

To me all AT3 really says is "we're doing away with our limited effects routing options, and not going to force people to buy multiple packs. Instead we'll make our effects routing closer to what GR4 is doing. And we'll put all the amps and effects into one product to begin with, just like GR4 has been doing for years."

So no I wouldn't say GR4 got owned. All GR4 has to do to get back on top of the game, IMHO, is adopt a Kore-style browser so you can select tones without having to go through all the menus.

I've been saving up to buy GR4 for a couple weeks and will be ordering it next week, and not AT3. I've been researching both and the following are souly my opinions. While AT3 looks promising, I'm concerned with a couple things, #1 I don't like expansion packs, companies should offer a full version of their software. #2 AT3 just came out, all new software has issues and needs several revisions to iron out the kinks. While GR4 may not be perfect yet, its further along that road. #3 This is my first venture into the computer based amplification world and need a Audio I/O to go along with it. IK didn't even make an attempt at matching the Kontrol, they want to sucker you into spending even more money over and above the stealthpedal, on the expression pedal and A/B box, or they're midi pedal board. That kind of business bugs me. I am sure GR5 will blow AT3 out of the water, like 4 did AT2. Thats the cycle of business and technology, I just try to avoid falling down that hole.

Everyone should download the demo of AT3, it's good for 10 days.
The sound quality is much improved from AT2 to 3
more pedals, amps and racks always good
    interface is a little better

I have GR4 and the interface is so much easier to use, I still think u have way more options with GR4, and AT3 is way too much money, with no pedal added to the price.

All amp sims have been much improved to me, thanks to the IR options we have now...do your research and find out for yourself ;)

Actually, there was a huge group buy just months ago.

You can still pick up Amplitube Live for $20 on audiomidi.com and then upgrade from there since it will qualify.

As for the debate, I'm just fine sticking with GR4. Like others mentioned already, I don't care for the faithful amp emulations since I have access to some nice hardware for that.

I just upgraded to Komplete 6 mainly for GR4 (well it also worked out to be cheaper to upgrade to K6 instead of upgrading all my individual software titles) and I have to say that this program is an effects junkies dream, with lots of room to grow.

I'm still hoping that NI responds with something killer, but considering GR4 was released not to long ago, hope will have to come with great patience. :(

    **edit**

You cannot upgrade from Amplitube Live, but the same store also has Amp Jimmy for $50 and that one does qualify.

I'm not sure I'd say GR4 "blew" AT2 out of the water. It'd be a better comparison to AT Fender since it came out a few months before GR4. AT2 has been out almost as long as GR2.

Also, NI has been pending a software update for more than 4 months now.
IK usually has pretty stable products from the get-go... that being said, I'm still a GR user... only for the Vox and Marshall models, though.

I will say, however that I do not like AT's Marshall models... the new AT3 amps sound better than anything except Marshall's in GR4. NI should've done more updating on the older models, then the differences wouldn't be so vast.

But then, of course, there's AT3's cabinet modeling...

I started with GR3 and RK3, I stopped using RK3 for the audio I/O only weeks after I got since the latency is too high and the A/D conversion isn't great. I bought an external firewire interface instead and the results were a lot better since then. If you're serious about this, you'll have to get an external audio interface anyway. So there's no reason to select GR or AT based on that criteria. I now use RK3 for pedals and as a MIDI interface and added a Voodoo Lab Ground Control Pro for more switching possibilities.

little confused about that last post which I/O were you using that you had latency issues with? I am new to all this, but it seems by the numbers, both the Kontrol and the stealthpedal would offer the processing power that just about anything on the market would, everything else boils down to inputs.
