And how about when Eric Johnson plays a whole set on a 335 instead of his Strat and still sounds EXACTLY the same...

You are ignoring to much in this discussion, and I see you are not going to convince me at all, and I'm not going to convince you at all. I'm not going to repeat the same over and over.
The romantic idea about Satriani can get a surfing with the alien tone only with his magic hands (his hands produce dalays, compression, stereo enhancers, chorus...) is full of fealing and sentimental, but it is not true.

Are you telling me a single coil sounds the same a humbucker does? Eric Johnsons uses live a ridiculous amount of delay, Ibanez Tube Screamer, reverb and again a ridiculous amount of delay. I dont like his tone at all, tone produced for the use of all this gear.

Yup. I was shocked to learn that "Zap" was done on a 335.

Regardless of how you feel about his tone, thats a pretty scary example...

No- you're the one who's ignoring too much. The hallmark of a pro is consistency...

I think, Eric, that maybe we should retire this thread, and move it to "workshop"... What do you think?

I'm thinking along the same lines, Marc.

I side with Marc and Eric on this one. Yeah, your gear is important, but it's not going to define you as a player.

Choose the gear that suits you but don't expect it to change the way you play. Have a listen to the song I just posted here (http://www.native-instruments.com/forum_us/showthread.php?t=52463). I'm playing 4 solos on guitar and bass, fingerpicking and using a plectrum, three different GR presets... You can still tell it's me. Same approach, same phrasing, same touch, no matter what sauce I spill over it.

What define you as a player is your style of playing, the notes you choice, the pharsing, the way you play. That is called Style.

    Tone is a different matter.

No, it's part of the subset. The way you pick; how hard you pick; how you mute; whether you pick or hammer your notes; this all has a bearing on what you call tone.

No, that is style of playing. The tone is the product of your style of playing and the gear you use.

We've agreed on that all along. THe arguing point's about how much of your tone's you and not the gear.
