I think it's about time you put it in GR, even with monophonic only it still be useful for lead stuff. And don't tell me this is difficult to achieve, i found this is a very easy thing to be made in Reaktor, so i can't see why you haven't implemented it in GR. Look at Sonuus guys, you're one step behind them. Check out this MIDI File, i made this with electric guitar connected to my Reaktor instrument in realtime, no hex pickup used. Shame on you if you can't make something like this on the incredible Guitar Rig, poor GR users :p

I would prefer a hex pickup interface in tandem with the monophonic implementation. On top of midi conversion (and integration with kontakt), I also still want NI to invest in guitar modeling. I'm trying to voice this every chance I get because I see it as a vital step for NI to compete with Line6 and Roland.

At this point, Audio to MIDI can even be done with polyphony in realtime. Do a search for WIDI for one solution. I'm using this with good (not perfect) results right now!

That's why there's no reason not to include it in GR, come on GR developers, what are you waiting for ?

I agree, Bert, and moreover, I think if the bright minds at NI were working on this - particularly their bright minds with an intimate understanding of electric guitar signal EQ and dynamics - this could be optimized to work even better than what I've got running now. (Presently, I'm massaging the input signal to WIDI with various eq and compression plugins, and tweaking the MIDI output similarly for sustain etc. but let's be honest, I only half know what I'm doing LOL.)

WIDISoft doesn't appear to be doing much with this tech at the moment, either (I still don't get why it's not famous by now) so it seems to me both parties could benefit by NI just flat out buying them.

Yeah i think the pitch detection wasn't intended for converting guitar signal :D

Right, WIDI is totally general-purpose, which is both good and bad. There's an EQ built in, which can help with ghost notes of harmonics, etc, but it doesn't account for the unique dynamics of the guitar.

Incidentally, there's another product called TS-Audio-to-MIDI which will not only analyze audio for polyphonic MIDI, it will actually recognize different timbres and split recorded performances of ensembles out to separate MIDI tracks for you!

All this stuff amazes me, and what's more amazing is that software devs don't really seem to be doing much with it. Meanwhile, people are still investing in expensive, inelegant hex pickup solutions.

Out of my curiosity i've mailed WIDI support once, asking why TS-Audio looks and feel so similar to WIDI, and they answered that TS-Audio is actually WIDI's code 'taken apart' by their former employee, so they both using same code :D I must say i'm totally impressed with the 'mono correlator' mode, super fast  but unfortunately no pitchbends :( so i customized it with VoiceKeys

Very interesting... I've been running WIDI in with max polyphony. I found TS a bit faster, but I preferred running a VST plugin (WIDI) as part of my Ableton Live template over having a separate application (TS) running in the background.

Lack of pitch bend has been one of the big comprimises, I agree. What is VoiceKeys? Can you post a link? Nothing google turns up looks relevant.

    Thank,
    Marc

Never mind, I think I've found it. VoiceKeys is this Reaktor ensemble? http://thepatchlab.com/patch.php?id=338

I own Reaktor but don't run it much anymore. Awesome product but a bit of a handful. :) Plus, I really need poly for most of what I do.

That one is the 'unofficial' :D here's the latest :

It's my disappointment that most monophonic converter is not even designed for 'real' realtime use, even the fast one like in TS-Audio / WIDI still don't respond well to guitar techniques. So i thought i'd 'propose' my 'opinion' about a pitch to MIDI converter that i like, as a Reaktor Instrument :)

I once try to emulate WIDI poly converter too, but currently i think it's still beyond me. But i think the real good polyphonic converter can be built if only i can figure out what inside Melodyne DNA

Ah... I didn't realize you were the developer of VoiceKeys, that is extremely cool!

Thanks :) I just want to express what i have in mind to people, that monophonic isn't the end of the world, lots of great guitar solos are monophonic, and not surprisingly, they were played in real guitar which is of course, poly ! :D And with more and more playing technique supported combined with expressive bends, the guitar can be a 'dangerous' MIDI controller even with mono only

Oh yeah, I can definitely appreciate the value of a monophonic algorithm that's fast and lean and expressive. There's definitely a trade-off in running a poly mode that lags a bit and/or omits pitch bend information. But most of the time I need something to drive chords through synth pads in the background, while I'm playing leads via conventional guitar audio.

I'd even consider using both - WIDI for the pads and your own Reaktor instrument for leads, but I think it would add alot of complexity - e.g. potential culprits when things start to go wrong. (I always feel less confident about stability when I'm running Reaktor as a plugin.)

There is my vote for guitar to midi or better guitar to "any musical instrument", my vg99 is amazing, but many things keep to be done in this matter, Ni is one who can do it.

I'll second that, krraqk. I'd LOVE to see someone putting some effort into DSP-based instrument modeling in a VST plugin format. I've been experimenting myself with vocoders, and resonators, eq, etc. in hopes of getting some useful tones without MIDI lag, but my efforts so far tend to all sound the same.

No they're not - look at GR4. Don't hold your breath - you'll just suffocate.

Yeah, everything i did in Reaktor is just for sharing 'ideas', as anyone can easily look at the structure to see inside, and intended for people who use Reaktor fully. But it's probably not too stable and too complex to be combined with everything else :)

Still no guitar to MIDI there..

Yeah, it's disappointing but true. I don't know why NI is dragging their feet so much. They've got an interesting collection of expertise, between their background in MIDI, virtual instruments, and now amp modeling. Most of the "popular musicians" that gravitate toward computer-based production play guitar - if not as their main instrument, then as one of their instruments. If NI would just pull a few ideas together - in even the most OBVIOUS of ways - they could reach a broader market with their existing products.

But yeah, I won't hold my breath waiting for them to make sense. I still shake my head everytime I stumble across my RK, and realize I can't use it to control any MIDI-aware software. How long have we been talking about that one, about three years now?
