what kind of headphones are they to be exact.

check inside your headphone slot to see if anythings in there creating a disturbance between the connection. have you tested the headphones on other items to verify they are not the problem?

    DJKilla,

Maybe OP thinks you got a crystal ball which tells you his exact headphone model?

Just got a pair of XONE XD2-53 headphones, and am having the same issue. This didn't happen with my Sony 700's (Which were great headphones until they broke and the pivot!)

Did you ever figure anything out around this?

headphone buzzing is not uncommon when using internal sound. it is usually caused by bus contention (due to things like video cards or drives) or an impedance mismatch (the headphone amplifier on the onboard soundcard isn't suitable to drive low-impedance, high-sensitivity headphones).

but it's rare to have buzzing issues on an USB audio interface such as the S4. i recommend contacting tech support about this issue. if you do, please report back here. i'd be curious to find out what's going on.

One final trick. Assuming that you're in the US, try an adapter on the power cable to just use the two power prongs instead of the third grounding prong.

The adapter that I'm referring to looks like this:

Plug everything in and see if you have the same hum in headphones. If not, you have an electrical ground problem.

To be clear, I do NOT advocate running this way long-term. Fix your grounding problem... if you have one.

Try running your laptop off battery power without the AC adapter connected, and also do not connect the S4 power supply.
This should confirm whether or not you have a grounding problem without the need for a prong adapter above.

^ Great thinking... I forgot that the S4 can be USB bus powered!

if it is a ground loop problem, wouldn't he hear the hum over the S4's main out as well?
