How to remove Reactor or other buggy DXi's from Sonar 2.0 Files

    Hallo JamesWalkerHall,

if you have problems with removing Reactor or other buggy DXi's from your Sonar 2.0 files/projects you should have a look into the readme.rtf of Sonar. On page 3 you will find this:

    "“Safe Mode” for File-Open

In some cases, a corrupt or incompatible DirectX, DXi or MFX plug-in will make it impossible to open a saved project file (CWB, CWP, CWT, WRK, BUN, or TPL files). If you have a project that uses plug-ins and will not open, SONAR may be able to open the project in “Safe Mode”. Hold the [Shift] key down while opening a file, to open it in "Safe Mode." This applies to all ways that a file can be opened (the File-Open menu, the MRU list and the Quick Start dialog box).

When a file is opened in safe mode, the following behaviors take effect:

Only the Track view will be opened, and it will be opened in its default layout. No other views will be opened or layouts applied. This allows projects which may run out of GDI resources due to having a large Console view open to open safely in Windows 98 SE.

The user will be prompted before each DirectX, MFX or DXi plug-in is loaded from the file. For each plug-in, you can specify Yes, Yes to All, No, No to All, as to whether that plug-in or all subsequent plug-ins will be loaded. This allows any misbehaving plug-ins to be identified."

    This should help.

ps: Reactor has something like the Alzheimer's disease after each reload of a Sonar project Reactor gets to know new ensembles dispite of that he has already met them. This is a bug very clear.

    hi pooh

thanks for the tip. i didnt think of using safe mode, i just thought that was for when .cwps fail to open, but now you point it out i can see how that would work for my problem, so ill try it - thanks!

I'm having problems on Windows XP trying to use Reaktor 3.05 with Fruityloops 3.55 and Cakewalk Home Studio 2002.

I cannot get these softwares to open Reaktor as a dxi plugin.

    What is Wibu?

Help! Sonar/Reaktor DXi crash when closing project

I've been having the same problem, too.I'm using a 933MHz PIII running Windows XP.Usually in my case,SONAR crashes instead of Reaktor, and it does seem to be tied into MIDI sync(Battery will also crash SONAR if I'm trying to do patterns from a drum map(I'm using SONAR 2.0}}.As for the previous question about Wibu, that's the dongle driver.

I made the changes to the wibu driver and now I can get Reaktor to open as a dxi plug in Fruity and Cakewalk Home Studio, but when I go to save the file, the prompt to save the ensamble comes up and no matter what you choose Fruity and Cakewalk locks up and quits responding.

Either way, the file Fruity or Cakewalk that you get is corrupted and will not reopen.

I can export audio with no problem, so at least I can now use it to sequence up loop files.

    support?

I just thought I'd put my name up again because I haven't had a reply (except the automated one) from NI email support on this sonar+reaktor issue. It certainly seems to be a general problem (it also crops up on the Cakewalk support groups). Perhaps someone at NI could post here to say what steps are being taken to solve this and how long it would take? Even if someone could confirm formant's post that it will be fixed in 3.3, that would be great.

I realise that answering support-request emails must seem like a bit of a waste of time before a fix is in place, but even a message that a fix is being worked on would allay some fears.

    All the best,
    Simon

    Problems with Reaktor and Sonar

I am having the same problem as the other people in this thread. I will provide my details here in hopes of helping NI support solve the problem.

When creating a Reaktor synth in Sonar (v2.0 with ReWire patch) using the synth rack, then playing some notes on the Reaktor synth, then closing down Sonar without closing any other windows first, I get the following error:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\SONAR 2\SONAR.EXE
    abnormal program termination

This is followed by a hard-lock on Win98SE, requiring a reboot. When I do the repro above, the crash happens every time.

If, however, I remove the Reaktor synth from the Synth Rack and then shut down Sonar, the crash does not occur.

I have the Reaktor 3.0.5 CD, which I updated with both "reaktor305update" and "reaktordxipatch". The only thing out of the ordinary on my PC is that I have three 8 port MIDI interfaces, and two soundcards (Event Gina, and Sound Blaster Live). The Sound Blaster Live is not enabled in Sonar.

In addition, I have no troubles with Reaktor in standalone mode, nor when using it from within Cubase VST32 5.1.

    Thanks,
    Brian

how i solved it for sonar v1.3.1

I used to have the problem of Sonar ver 1.3.1 crashing when I closed a song containing Reaktor. It seemed to be fixed after I reinstalled the latest version of Reaktor with the latest patches from the NI website. The one thing I did first though, was make sure I deleted all versions of the Reaktor 3 VST.dll in my system. Somehow one of the earlier versions of the that dll was still in one of the VST plugin folders. I think this was because during an earlier installation I told Reaktor to install the dll in more than one place.
After that I made sure it only installed the Reaktor 3 VST.dll to one location.

Yeah, the DXi patch, etc. worked fine for 1.3.1:but with 2.0,it's a different ball game.I've never installed Reaktor as a VST,so left over VST.dll files aren't the problem here.

I have the same problem in Win2k!!!

The exact same thing happens to me with Sonar 2.0 and Reaktor under Win2k. I have all of the latest patches installed. I also just got Reaktor and I hope this problem is addressed quickly.

    NI/Cakewalk bugs on tour!!

I notice with interest that NI are "on the road" with Cakwalk in the states... They will apparantly be giving demos of their products "in combination with Sonar 2.0".

If anyone in the states can go to one of these, perhaps they can persuade one of the demonstrators to shut down Sonar at some point? Should be interesting! :)

I can't believe that they are happy to go out on tour demonstrating Reaktor in combination with Sonar 2.0 when:

    a) Reaktor crashes Windows on shutting down in Sonar 2.0 and
    b) loading Reaktor using the new DXi interface in Sonar means that it forgets what patch it was using.

Aren't they just going to look really stupid??

    ...

This is an issue I have been hounding them about for a while.
They are aware of it and told me that the next patch should
fix it. What I want to know is when will the patch be released.

    Reaktor/Sonar Dxi crash

Thanks for the good advice. I was always clicking the cancel button when the crash box comes up. This causes the computer to have to be restarted for Sonar to start again. If I wait until it says ok like you said, I can restart Sonar and the computer doesn't crash. This is a pretty lame workaround, but it's better than having to restart. Of course, you still have to manually select patches for each instance of Reaktor. I also use Win2K sp2. I have no idea if this applies to other operating systems. mind

Multiple instances causes the Sonar DXi crash!!!

I can reproduce this every time here under Win2k with the latest Reaktor and Sonar 2.0. A project with one instance of Reaktor can be manipulated and opened/saved/closed indefinitely without any problems (other than having to manually save ensembles and presets and manually load presets when the file opens). Insert a second instance of Reaktor, save the project, close Sonar, then the crashing begins. If I reboot, open the file with 2 Reaktor instances, delete one instance, save it, no problems. Can anyone else confirm this??? mind

i wish it was that simple...

    ...but it isnt.

i have been using sonar and reaktor dxi ever since the dxi was available, and i still have absolutely no idea what causes a project to start crashing, whereas others (about 20% id guess) are fine. the lack of consistency is no doubt why the bug hasnt been picked up by the coders yet. it certainly isnt using more than one instance of reaktor (although this does seem to make problems more likely). i very rarely use multiple instances of reaktor, as i route several instruments through a mixer in one reaktor instance, and i still have lots of crashes on closing on projects with 1 instance.

the main problem for me is that when sonar crashes often midi yoke stops working and i have to restart the computer to get it back (i often use other softsynths in standalone mode). if you dont use midi yoke (most people probably) then i cant really see that sonar crashes on closing is anything more than annoying.

it would of course be very nice to have it fixed, although im not hopeful. reaktor isnt the only NI program to not work quite right in dxi mode after all... as long as we get multiple outputs in 3.3 ill be happy...
