    keep in mind that the max patch you posted regularly goes well above the nyquist frequency. it multiplies the carrier freq by the mod freq and multiplies that by an envelope that can be as high as 24. so even if you set both the car and mod freq to, say 10, the FM ends up being equal to around 2400 when the envelope is fully on.

    the AM tuning sounds you are hearing is the frequency being rounded off to be something playable.it is also what gives it the character you were looking for. the difference when turning the knob though is that the pitch change is abrupt as opposed to when it's changing thru the envelope, slowly morphing thru values .

    it's not really designed to be a synth in it's present form (there are not even any midi pitch modules in the patch currently), it's just to show off the technique in that max patch.

    wow those are incredibly close thanks for sharing (way better than the comparison you've got up from 3 days ago). :D i feel pretty good about figuring that out, quite a doozy for such a simple max patch.
