i just really started setting up my hotkeys... I have the basics like volume, fader and tempo control.... What are some other good ones to add...

Is there anyway to control the active deck (the deck in focus) with a hotkey...

    THanks alot!

nearly everything you can see on the GUI can be controlled by hotkeys (and some things you cannot see on the GUI like deck reverse).

so what exactly do you want?

beware! if you assign hotkeys (or midi shortcuts) for browsing up/down and expanding/collapsing the browser-tree folder list, it will crash traktor :(

i submitted a bug report about this problem before the last revision (3.1.3), but the bug is still there.

nativegirl - is there any chance that you help speed up the fix of this simple bug? i don't have the support ticket number to hand but could post it tonight.

    thanks

I noticed this bug too. Hasn't happened too recently but it used to just shut down the program without even showing an error box.

For live gigs. I have all of my basic fuctions set up as hotkeys play, cue play and set cue. I dont worry about the active window. I set them for each deck. For Traktor 2.6.2 I split the keyboard in half. so half the key board controls deck A the other half control deck B. No active window settings. Start off with the just the basic functions. Add bits at a time. Try not to have your keyboard set with a lot functions you dont use. Remember at live gigs the main thing is music selection and keeping the crowd moving, not how many hotkeys you can set. Remember Traktor can do a lot of powerful stuff. Just focus on the things you like to do, you dont have to use every feature offered or assign a midi or hot key to every function or meter or button you see on the screen. I have had traktor since version 1 and there are things I never use at a live gigs. In short, figure out what you want to do, set up Traktor to help you do it, then evolve slowly.

    good advice indeed

just set up things you can't get away from - dont even worry about EQ to begin with.
make sure you can play/stop/cue and level (and/or crossfade)

then do some mixes - it wont be long till you'll fancy some EQ control.
    map them then

do some more mixes - you might get a bit bored and fancy some looping.
map them too (not all of them again, just simple Set/In/Off and maybe 4 / 8 bars button)

    guess what? some more mixes!

eventually, you'll have mapped things you wanna use

when you feel you got a good package, then remap everything using a better layout that suits your eyes, size of your fingers (not kidding here) and the way your brain works.

the greatest thing about midi controlling is that you can design your own mixer - use this to your advantage.

trying to figure it all out in 1 go and add all features etc without doing any attempts at mixing is always either gonna leave you pissing about for hours or lurking on forums trying to find 'the ultimate setup'
then one day you realise you haven't even done 1 mix yet

thats all great stuff - thanks alot...

i have the basics done - i also split mine by left and right on keyboard... i use alt + arrow keys for tempo (left right) and volume (up down) on deck B, the ctrl key for deck B...

i want to figure out the focus command because i want to be able to change speeds on my cross fades, temp and volume adjustments...

    THANKS FOR ALL GOOD INSIGHT...

Is there a good way to program 'Loop Length Increase' and 'Loop Length Decrease' to stay within the preset sizes, like 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32? At the moment, mine are just going to random sizes each time I press the button, and I don't have enough buttons to assign one to each loop size. I could just have the two most important, like 4 and 8 or 1 and 4, but I'd rather not.

    Anyone have any input?

yes, you can do it. you can map buttons to make loop length half or double, which means you can easily step up and down in even steps.

you'll have to play around with the shortcuts, but you should be able to get it working with minimal buttons.

sorry to be vague, i am not at my traktor right now!

use instead the hotkey loop length next/ previous and beforehand assign the 4 buttons to the values you like. it just works differently.

my suggestion is to set only hotkeys for such controllers you really need.

i make only transitions from one to the other song. therefore i need only EQ low cut hotkey to the standart like crossfader. i also put sync to a hotkey as this is usefull too.

rest can be done by mouse.

Has anyone found a way to set a hotkey to toggle "Synchro Start" in the preference pages? That would be extremely handy, as I tend to switch it on for sequenced stuff (house/electro etc.) but off for real instrument stuff (disco/jazz-funk etc).

    I'm on 2.6.2

There is a way to do syncrostart that is actually better than syncro start. Actually two ways... at least on T3, I cant remember if you can dupe assign on 2.6.2.

1/ Assign Deck | Tempo | Deck Tempo Sync Slave and set the conrol type to toggle. This will have the effect of locking sync on and when the deck plays it will automagically be in sync.

2/ Assign Deck | Tempo | Deck Tempo Sync Slave and set the control type to hold. Use the same key as you use deck Play Pause and when you press play it will sync when it starts playing.

Since you can assign the same key to multiple functions and the same function can be activated by different keystrokes exactly what you want is also possible.

Another tip, if you use Deck seek, try also assigning sync to it, each time it seeks, it also syncs. You can seek through an entire track in just 2-3 seconds and stay in sync all the way through...

Let me know how you get on.... ;)
When it comes to programming hot keys, save your current key settings. Set your internal mode to "adventurous", think outside the box and experiment. There are loads of things you can do if you just play around a little bit, some will work, some will look good on paper but will suck in practice, just experiment post your findings and keep asking questions ;-)

Beware the autorepeat bug when duplicating keys ;-( Its fixed in T3.3... I think...
