i have to activate the "grid" button, then click "auto" or "fix". then i have to adjust the sensitivity or number of markers, but it always adds way too many even at the lowest setting. I always end up deleting a million of them anyway and it gets tedious and time consuming. How can i just start with a clean slate and add one marker at a time without AI making the transient markers for me?

Delete the zone and load the sample again, I think there's no other way.

Also this seems to be a very long sample. Of course it's gonna find a ton of transients. You migth wanna use Fix mode and adjust grid size. Or, first trim your sample to be shorter.

yea i do have some very long samples i like to experiment with, but is there a mode where it doesn't automatically enter those transient markers for you and i can just apply them myself manually?

Not to my knowledge. You might be better served with Fixed mode rather than Auto mode, then changing grid size. But yeah it's still gonna create the slice markers automatically.
