This summer I plan on purchasing a few things to go along with the maschine
    Ableton Live 8
    an APC 40
and finally a 61 or 88 key midi keyboard
AND some monitors but thats neither here nor there
all of this on a 1 year old Vaio laptop running windows 7 with very good specs

kid the first thing to get is a good pro soundcard,
    next is the monitors
third a daw of your choice, download demos and see what suits you and your maschine best

    lastly a keyboard

    all these before anything else

hi, the setup you're planning looks great and should serve you well all you need to do is add a soundcard and monitors and you're good to go. and make sure you get yourself an external hard drive for all of your samples and to store your song data on.

Awwwh good thread. Here is what I have and currently plan to buy. What will be the best connection route please.

    Currently have the following:

Music Pc: Running an AMD dual core with M-Audio 2496 Sound card [See link]
    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile2496.html

    Behringer UMX 61 midi keyboard

    Phonic MU 802 Mic/line mixer

    ASM MK219 Mic
    http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Oktava/MK-219

    FruityLoops 9

Coming in a few weeks time:

    Native Instrument Maschine

    Roland Juno G

The only thing is that I haven't decide on the software I will be using. I am after something nice and simple to use and hence am looking at Ableton live?

Anyway, what will be the best way to connect and probably which DAW to go for? Fruity loops is okay, but I want something simpler or easier to learn. Thanks.

+1 for soundcard and monitors first

@ elrazur, ableton is not "easier " than fruity loops, just different , check the demos...
u want smth really simple and don't need additional instruments and effects , jus a vst-rack , check the reaper demo

+1 for soundcard. Maschine is useless for realtime playing without an audio interface that will deliver low to very low latency.

If you don't have a good pair of headphones, I'd probably put that on the list over monitors. I have used Sony 7506's for years and use them for everything from tracking to dj'ing. Usually around 100 dollars at GC.

Ableton is NOT easier than FL (for my purposes anyways)... That being said, Ableton is my primary piece of audio software. Maschine is what I go to first for drums (despite owning an MPC and an MD).

Thank you guys. Reaper looks interesting and it is not very expensive at all. Still checking it out though and I have the page booked marked.

As far as I know there's a DAW/seq from PreSonus? There's more to choose from than you can shake a stick at.

    I currently own:
    Pro Tools M-Powered
    Logic 8
    Ableton 7
    Record

It was a trial and error process, as some are not available as demos.
There's Garageband that's free with the mac that a lot of people swear by.. Steinberg Sequel.
    Cubase, Sonar, Nuendo, etc.

And most of them have LE or Lite versions too!

You're going to have to first figure out what exactly it is that YOU want to do, and then get the software that caters to those needs.

Soundcard and monitors or decent headphones first!

What counts as a low latency? My maschine is about 30 ms... seems fine to me..

30 ms is pretty much , i noticed im fine with everything lower than 12 ms , mine is running 4.5 min at 64 buffer size , try to set the buffer of ur soundcard lower,as long as u dont have drop outs with to high cpu ,the latency will get lower as well...
in the end if 30 ms is fine for your needs , its fine ;)

all of the daws out there are great but there's no other daw that makes such a great combination with maschine than ableton live, go ahead and follow you're first instincts
    they were correct.
