I have a number of piano libraries that run in Kontakt 5. I'd like to be able to play two of them at the same time to produce a mixed sound and to capture the best of both. But when I load two pianos into Kontakt only one of them plays ... always the one that was loaded first.

Is there a way to achieve what I want?

Yes. Make sure, that the Midi-Input-Channel is the same for both instruments.
You can find the "Midi-Ch" field beneath the Audo-Output field in the header-bar of the instruments.

Yes that's how you do it. Be careful with layering piano sounds though. I had this bright idea myself many times only to realize I should just start with a good sounding piano and add stereo width with reverb or mid-side processing. Layering always tended to give an un-natural sounding chorus effect. There is a reason you don't tend to hear a chorus of pianos in any form of music, unless you're trying to sound experimental! :)
