This is driving me up the wall. I just want to rename a folder that's been created when I imported music. I assumed if I did a right mouse click I'd get a context sensitve menu offering to "Edit" or "Rename" but I get nothing when I try CTRL + mouse click or right mouse click in Windows or CMD + mouse click on OS.X.

What do I have to do to rename a folder? This should be so simple but Traktor seems to make it so hard. googling it gave me no answers either :-(

do you mean the "music folder"? you can rename that in your OS just like any folder. however, you have to relocate your collection then, since all paths will be broken afterwards.

I've imported some albums which have inconsistent titles eg "DMC CC 365" vs "DMC Commercial Collection 366" which have their own folders under "Releases" which I can't rename.

In the end I discovered that if I select the release folder and change the Release Name for ALL the tracks that then display in the browser (eg "DMC CC 366" in the above example) then the folder gets renamed as well. But this seems poor UI design to me, especially as I have to go in and change multiple tracks. Better UX would let me just right-click the folder and have it filter down through the "Release" field on the individual tracks. This is the way eg Denon's "Engine" software works. Having right-click work in the browser but not the Track Collection panel is inconsistent and confusing.

It's frustrating coming to Traktor after "Engine". The Traktor browser looks ugly, large and ungainly by comparison. But unfortunately Denon's "Engine" software, and especially the browser, is completely broken ("Search" does absolutely nothing no matter what you select, and whenever you try and bring up the fact Search doesn't work on the Denon support forums they delete it within seconds because they don't want potential purchasers to find out!) so I'm having to move everything over to Traktor.

maybe you should learn about digital files before using them. "Tags" in case of MP3 they're called ID3 are metadate stored within the mp3. They are read from Traktor to create these "folders", which list up all mp3 that have writen "DMC CC366" in the "album" field of the tags.

You may want some extra Tag-Editor. For Windows I could recommend foobar2000 or MP3Tag these can handle multi-formats and have some powerful editing options. I dont use mac... so dont know much about them, but most seem to use iTunes for editing tracks.

I know all about tags thank you :)

I don't use MP3 and I don't want to get into the tired old "a 320k mp3 is as good as a lossless format" debate here. Suffice to say I rip all my CDs to .wav (for my Denon SC3900-based system which can't play FLAC files) and FLAC (for my Traktor S8 Kontroller-based system) and MP3 just to listen to "on the go" on iPhone/iPad. Obviously I prefer FLAC because of the smaller size for a lossless format and metatag support which WAV doesn't have.

Anyway,I use a PC to RIP my CDs and use the program DbPowerAmp to try and enter the correct tags/metadata. This is where I got an album title wrong but I don't want to use DbPowerAmp to correct the title because that would involve re-ripping the CDs which takes way too much time. Unfortunately I'm not always consistent in my naming and a good "record box" piece of software (Traktor's browser) should have excellent tagging support built in.

I don't use iTunes import because iTunes itself is a mess that changes its UI seemingly every few weeks and gets more and more difficult to use, quite aside from the fact it doesn't support the FLAC files I want for my Kontroller S8.

Which is why I asked the question. I should be able to correct tags in Traktor and add new ones. I'm sure Traktor does that - but the way it's been implemented seems "basic" or somewhat limited at best, at least compared with the way iTunes or "Engine" do it where you can easily change the top-level tag for the album and have it percolate down through the album tracks (or vice-versa) With Traktor I can't do that - I'm forced to correct the individual tracks and then Traktor somehow picks up on that and changes the top-level name at the album level - the changes only go one way (up the tree) cf Engine/iTunes which allow changes to go up and/or down the tree.

traktor is very poor when it comes to library management features, which is a polite way of saying it is barely capable of the most basic tasks in this sense. you've just found yourself in front of one of many, maybe.

maybe, because if i understood correctly, what you want to do is to change the release name (usually, 'album' or 'album name' in any other app that reads ID3), and you want to do it on several files at once, so it reflects on the releases "smart folder"* on top of the track collection. (*it hurts me to call "that" smart...)

to do so, within traktor, first you have to locate yourself somewhere within the track collection node. you won't be able to edit tags neither on the explorer node nor the itunes node.

then, select those tracks you want to edit (click on the first, shift click on the last), get to the edit pane (right click over the selected tracks, select "edit") and there you can modify the tags for all those files.

PS: you never know all about tags... there are always surprises ;)

those "folders" under releases are created by traktor from the tracks' tags! go into the "folder", highlight all tracks then right-click and choose edit. edit the album name and choose "edit all".
    "folder" gone.

i put "folder" in quotes, because actually, it's not a folder, it's a playlist built from the tags of your tracks!
