This seems like such a stupid question because it must be the 2nd most important requirement when using the Kontakt player.

I cannot figure out how to simply save a preset - that is, I've made a few changes to the attack and release, and I want to save these settings. I hope that's called a "Preset".

If you think this is obvious, please let me know.

I've read the manual, in particular the section on Saving and Loading Presets. It says:
...preset management in KONTAKT takes place within each module’s preset drop-down menu. You can access this menu by clicking on the button labeled Pre or Preset that’s located on the left side of each module

I just cannot find a "Pre or Preset... dropdown" on the left side. Not that I'm exactly sure what a module is. I've searched everywhere.

If you've even seen a Preset dropdown (not the tab button) that allows you to save presets in Kontakt 4, please let me know. I have a sneaking feeling that the reference manual is referring to a previous version of the software.

I don't know how much more of the manual I can read (I've read some sections over many times), I am completely lost and cannot figure this out.

What you call a "preset" is actually an "instrument" in Kontakt speak. So you will have to save the opened instrument as a new NKI, by clicking on the Files icon.

A "preset" in Kontakt speak is containing settings for one of the following things: group FX chain, insert FX chain, send FX chain, script, modulator, modulator curve/table. Those are NKP files.

Bear in mind that whenever you save something in Kontakt Player that's not intended for Kontakt Player (lots of 3rd party libraries are like that), the file will automatically enter 15 minute timeout demo mode. For full-fledged editing of everything, you need a full version of Kontakt.

    I see, thank you.
Also I'm glad you mentioned the licensing restriction.

I gather you can still save instruments for the free Kontakt player (which I guess would be the default) even without the full license? That is, I wouldn't know how to create something "not for Kontakt" so presumably I should be safe ;)

I have a license for EvolveMutations2 so I can still use that to save instruments if that's not the case.

Yep, I think you should be able to save the instruments that come with Kontakt Player, since they do get registered with Service Center.
