Are you using Traktor 3 or Pro?

Effects can be used in a couple of ways.
    - you can put an effect on a track (so it only effects this track and not the other tracks that play simultaneously in a mix)
    - you can put an effect on the master output, so it effects everything that comes out of the master output

To use an effect on a track (in T3 at least): let a track play, choose an effect, make sure the focus for the effect is on the deck you're playing (A,B,C or D), press the "on" button on the effect and pull up the amount knob. The knob totally to the left is the "dry signal" (no effect, only the music), to the right is the "wet signal" (all effect, no "unaffected" music), in between is a mix between the dry and the wet signal.

What effects you use and how much depends on the kind of music you play. Dub and reggae will go good with delay and reverbs, techno with filters and flangers. Use them all and see what you like.

And read the manual, everything you need to know is in there...
And google the effects to know more about them. Most of the effects are standard effects that can be found in every software DAW or hardware music studio.

    Is yours?

My (like many peoples) first mixer didn't have any effects on it, at some point I had to learn the best ways of using effects, what they do, how their parameters work, how to chain them, admittedly the best way is probably to experiment but whats wrong with asking how other people do it?

I wasnt trying to dis anyone but its just something you have to play around with.. depends on what kind of music your playing. Everyone has their own mixing style... me I personally like to use the delay with a little filter. I havent played around to much with the effects in traktor. My first experience with effects was on a behringer djx700 mixer.... wow. That things effects were rough. Traktor is nice cause it will automatically adjust to your bpm. As to where the djx700 you had to select something that was "close" to the bpm. My advice.. put a track on.. run through all the effects, see what each one sounds like, then start to double them up once you feel comfortable. Sorry again.

It won't sound bad if no one hears it, so practice away at home before taking it on the road. When I first started playing with effects, I was borrowing a friend's cheapo guitar effects unit for gigs and was just a kid in a candy store with the stuff; a few gigs were totally ruined because in my inexperience I'd leave the filter on or set the delay wrong, then just ruin the sound, and sometimes even the mix.

Practice, take notes, you'll eventually get a feel for what effect works, not just for each situation, but each part of each song. For example, LRD's Disco To Disco really screams with a nice high pass filter right as the buildup peaks to the big drop. Works every time for me, I don't even have to think about it anymore I just mash that button and go nuts.

Use the effects that work and sound good to you and the music you play.

I personally use GATER, DELAY, and FILTER depending on the track. GATER to chop up sustained sounds or vocals, DELAY to add builds to monotonous tracks, and FILTER to control the energy of a track to an unsuspecting dance floor.

IMO, effects on tracks are like make up on girls. Done right, it can make a girl look better, or more unique. Too much make up, and she might end up looking like a clown. Some girls don't need any make up at all to look good.

Hope that analogy made sense. :D

I feel that effects are like makeup for guys...not everyone uses it, and those who don't make fun of those who do.

Try as I might, I can't get the imagery out of my head of you doing some girl to the beat, and raising your hands and yelling "Yaaaaahhhh" every time the higher-pitched synth line pops....

"Hey baby, let's get it on"
    "OK"

    Dun-unt....whhhaaaaaaa

    Da-dun-unt....whhhaaaaaaa

"Disco to disco, disco to disco...."
