I have been seeking support from NI for the last 3 weeks now and still not getting anywhere. I have bought a new iMac and I am trying to move my purchased NI plugins across to the new Mac. Trouble is that the CD's of the original don't seem to work with Snow Leopard and I bought Guitar Rig soft so no original CD to install from. NI are completely ambivalent to this dilemma and have been very blase about my predicament despite my requests for assistance. Support indeed!
What I would like is to be able to download the original Guitar Rig purchase. The one I paid for so that I can activate it on my Mac. Do you think I get a response. No way. I would also like to get some assistance in setting up my other purchases, Absynth and Kontakt. I know that these are not the latest renditions but that is my perogative if I don't want to upgrade. That should not exclude me from assistance. What does it take to get some assistance? And finally, it would be wise to get a better system than the Service Centre. It is flaky. It says that my Guitar Rig 2 has been activated but does not show up anywhere.

    So what was the problem?

I'm not on Mac but I'm sure others would be very curious to know.

Well, that's an interesting question. I'm not really sure. I transferred mostly everything from the old computer to the new iMac and it still wouldn't activate properly. I then tried bringing in the old Mac's preferences and it worked. I was able to activate GR3 and the service centre recognised it was there. I have upgraded to GR4 in the meantime just to ensure I have no issues in future.
What comes out of this more than anything is the fact that NI wont allow you to download the original "soft" version of the product you have bought. In this case GR2 and or 3. I have access to all my serial numbers and if my archive crashes or I lose my original installs then I am stuffed, as in this case and have to go to great lengths to
reinstate my plugin. I am not sure what the NI policy is on this and would like to know so that it doesn't happen again.

I don't get it. Did you re-install or did you import your installation from your old computer?

If the former, you should not have licensing or activation problems. Just install the apps and plugins, install Service Center, and activate. I assure you, it works better than it did just a few years ago.

I didn't know the latter would be possible, but it doesn't seem to me that this would cause you future licensing problems; after all, you still have to go through the Service Center to do anything with regards to activation or updates.

Service Center doesn't work - period. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version 5 times (with reboot) and it won't list my Komplete 6 software at all. I have Win XP SP3 32 bit. Very annoyed at this immature take-a-ticket and wait 3 weeks system. I have a ticket, but now I can't use software I ordered in September and received yesterday (Jan22). It's stuck in Demo mode.

I'm surprised the service centre recognises me and logs me in!

If anybody can help, please email a solution to edwin@geoffrey.com.au as I found it near impossible to simply log into these forums!

I re-imported. This is why I was having so many problems. As I stated earlier NI will not allow you access to the original file - the one you actually paid for - if it was downloaded. This is I find peculiar and probably contravenes your legal rights. They provide the updated files - but you must have the original for the update to work. So if you have a crash or lose your archive of the original which by this stage has been updated a couple of times then you are stuffed.

The service centre should allow you to look on shared drives which it doesn't.
In any case I reckon that unless NI up their service to customers they will lose them as their is an ever increasing volume of competition out there. For instance Logic 9 provides you with everything you need really and it is CPU friendly unlike some of the convoluted plugins that NI have to date provided.
Hopefully they don't become too big for their boots.

Software companies are not required to keep historical downloads forever.

If you buy any downloadable product, I would always recommend burning at least one backup copy.

Sure, this is without question. But I have written to NI and let them know that for reasons as I have stated above I couldn't find my archive. HD crash and so on.
But can you tell me where NI specifically state that they will not hold soft downloads forever? Normally, they and most other companies alert customers that they will no longer do this and this gives everyone a chance to download what is rightfully theirs as a failsafe. I for one have not received any notification.

There is no specific statement, nor is there any legal requirement to provide notification.

I guess we must buy different software, because I the only notification I have ever received from any software company related to "temporary" download links, where the company states "this download link will only be available for x days".

I would agree that NI should keep some record of your original transaction, and should therefore do something to help you out if they can't provide the original download, perhaps by giving you a discounted upgrade to the most current version.
