with regards to reaktor, which is the better apple laptop to run reaktor on, the ibook G4? (lower end currently @ 1ghz with max 1 gig ram), or the powerbook? Just wondering thanx.

    the Powerbook

it should also be noted that substantial problems with the iBook logic boards have been reported
(models manufactured between between May 2002 and October 2003)

I'd always go for the Powerbook.

The powerbook is going to be faster. They go up to 1.5ghz now, and I think they may have bigger cache (which helps a lot with Reaktor). Look into the cache thing.

512K SRAM on-chip L2 cache, faster system bus, as well, faster hard drive (Ultra ATA), 2 Firewire 2 USB Slots, one PC Card/CardBus slot (none on the iBook)
comes with build-in 10/100/1000BASE-T (Gigabit), comes with build-in 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme; built-in Bluetooth

(I'm talking about the 15/17 inch models)

When I set the cache on my laptop lower, CPU usage increases in Reaktor like 15-20%, so it definitely helps.

Oh, and one more thing (?!): Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, the WWDC, gets going on June 28 in San Francisco. If you intend to buy a Powerbook, wait until that is finished. Jobs might announce new hardware, who knows.

Definitely wait. I've got my fingers crossed for a dual 3ghz machine, because I can't work with anything less.

P.S. If it helps, I use a 1.25ghz Powerbook, and I find it sufficient for nearly anything I do in Reaktor. Then again, I always run it standalone. If you're one of those VST nuts what with your buffer overriding and reverbing and whatever other crap you freaks of nature do (god DAMN I'm angry today, I need caffeine), then definitely go for a high end powerbook. The G4 is kind of a piece of crap compared to the Pentium M processor.

The new iBooks are just plain ugly, with their rough-white surface... look how cool the iceBooks were, so I'd say go for the powerbook instead. But then its also about money, and the iBooks really can be used for serious work.

Okay, time to dispel the myths :)

The iBooks motherboards / chips are exactly the same as the Powerbooks. Look at the tech-specs over at Apple:
    DDR 266 RAM
    512KB L2 cache

The only difference is the clock speed and possibly the hard drive speed (i think 4200 in the iBooks and 12" Powerbook, 5400 in the 17 and 15" Powerbooks)

So, the new iBooks are more than capable of running Reaktor. In fact they'll match the Powerbooks from just a generation ago (well it depends on the model :) )

well, yes. I've seen people appear live using the iBooks. But then again he was asking which is better Power- or iBook.

Well, I used to have a Powerbook. The 12" Aluminium when it came out. But when the iBooks came out with G4s I sold my Powerbook and bought a 14" iBook G4. And I prefer it - just the right size and it doesn't burn my entire wrist off with the "make the case the heatsink" thinking behind the Al Powerbooks.

And hey, we're all friends here, man. Although if I keep posting such self-serving posts who knows what will happend :)
