You would be best to go to 4GB for a few reasons,

If you have a desktop, to go to 3GB then you are going to have 2X1GB and 2X512MB DIMMS and you are gonna get timing delays between the two DIMM Pairs. If you have a laptop the same applies with SoDIMMs but more a little more observable effect. Its proetty small but MIGHT have a decent effect on realtime O/S performance.
Keeping matched DIMM sets across sockets reduces the chances of errors caused by timing and memory mismatches.

4GB of RAM will on x86 provides only limited value because the top 1Gb is used by system devices for memory mapped I/O and in all reality you can really only use about 3.4GB of full amount. Its still worth going to 4GB especially if you have a Core2 processor and plan to go to x64 in the near future. You won't need to reinvest in more memory when you do as x64 will allow you to use the full 4GB.

I can tell you the extra ram above 2GB is worth the expense especially so if you play with 4 decks and use 256MB Deck caches. The extra performance boost from having more RAM free will make it well worth while.

What Phil says about having 3gig ram is very interesting.
There is a whole series of Macbook Pros (mine included) that can only have a max of 3gig of ram.

I have seen better performance from my Mac since going from 2 to 3 gig but its certainly food for thought.

Phil does what you say apply to Mac ram as well? I imagine it does. It makes the max of 3gig in any machine a strange choice for a manufacturer .

is not strictly OS Platform related this, karlos,

is only a "dual chanell" problem for both pcs and macs.

    I've one question for PhilL:

U've installed tpro on windows 7,

well, and I see that you use both Xp and Windows 7 on the same machine,

Was you going with problems installing windows 7 after Xp, or have you installed Xp before windows 7?

    tnks in advance.

    :)

No, even though this is true to a certain degree. To make it clear: You cannot make use of >=4GB RAM with x86 machines running a 32Bit OS (doesn't matter which platform). Depending on how the motherboard maps (which was told misleading by PHilL above) graphics & PCI bus devices you can make practical use of 3-3.5GB RAM with 32Bit OSses. Even though this doesn't make much additional sense for WinXP since it can only allocate 2GB of memory to one single process. MACs AFAIK since OSX 10.4. support 64Bit processors and thus are able to make use of >4GB RAM. WinXP64Bit and Vista64 can do that too if you own a processor with the x64 extension and a motherboard which supports 64Bit operation.

WAS! This was an issue with the older chipsets capable of dual-channel. According to Intel (I just can't find the link) with recent chipsets you do not need equally sized RAMs.

All in all it does not make any harm if you put in 4GB of RAM with current prices even if youu can only make use of 3-3.5GB.

    xcuse, but I meaning...

"reason to put same ammount of ram on 2 slot is not strictly related to os, but to HW"

after, i know that you never will use 4gig of ram on a 32bit os, but this is another fact, isn't it?

I'm using 2gb machine with Vista premium.
It has T3, TS and Tpro installed and a whole load of other software. Everything works fine and always has done.

I totally agree that it is down to how you set your computer up to run these juicy applications. I read through the manual and carried out some of the optimizing processes but not all of them. It is'nt necessary to do them all.

I think the bottom line is and always will be, before setting up any new software...................READ THE FACKIN MANUAL!

I don't understand this "dedicated to Traktor" thing ... I use my MacBook everyday on the net for surfing and emails, and can use wireless broadband (Vodafone 3G USB stick) while at my gig to log into my computer at home to get tracks off my server that I don't get a chance to put on my MacBook before the gig. I even sometimes have the Airport sharing the internet connection out to my iPhone while playing and have never had a glitch, pop or crackle.

The only thing I make sure I do every couple of weeks is to run Onyx to clean the caches, repair permissions and run daily/weekly/monthly scripts.

I still use my laptop as my portable workstation, I'm just very careful what I do on it.

If I use the internet I only use it for purposeful things. I have a desktop for doing all my garbage on and I'm still careful with that one too.

You just have to be smart on how you configure things and disable unnecessary functions when spinning.

Well, I took a MBP from late 2008 (15 ", 2.4 dual core, 4gb ram) and sticked in more 2 gb.

    Use:
Office, Internet, Adium (MSN like service)
    Photoshop and some like that
    Traktor, Ableton Live and Logic
    XP: Gaming

Nothing to complain except for the notorius slowed startup (though it takes 1 minute only xD)

Use fan control to cool the beast.
