Hey all I'm new here. I just heard about iMaschine in a link in my email from Native Instruments and was really excited, until I found out that it's only supported in iOS4.2. I have an original iPod Touch 1st gen, nothing special, and was wondering if I can still use this program? Only reason I'm asking is because I could really use the program with my "home studio" and recording, so if anyone could answer this question, I would be really grateful. BTW, the original iPod touch is at firmware version 3.1.3. Thanks again.

I'm in a similar position, having an iPhone that is from before the 3GS and so officially not supported. I am hoping that the specs on the product page are just what NI will support and not what you actually need to use the app. I'm going to try it anyway and see what happens. If it doesn't work, I'll still have it for if/when I upgrade my phone or buy an iPad.

My lack of ability to upgrade to Beatmaker2 was probably the BIGGEST reason I bought a new Ipod. Just sayin :(

Hey Sm0keydaBear, welcome to the forum.

There's been an intentional hard cut here I'm afraid. We had to exclude earlier models (the iPod touch 1st and 2nd Generation, the original iPhone and iPhone 3G) due to hardware or software features they lack but iMaschine needs.

So iMaschine will absolutely refuse to run on those previous models? Or is it just a case of them not being supported?

Generally, if you don't have the minimum OS version installed on your iDevice, an app will either:

    1. Not appear in the App Store for you at all.
    2. It will appear, and you will be allowed to purchase it, but as soon as the download/install process begins, it will stop, and your iDevice will display a notification that the app cannot be installed now, but will be the next time you connect to iTunes (except it won't, because you'll never be given the option to update to the required OS version).

If—and this is completely hypothetical, and I certainly would never recommend doing anything of the sort, IANAL but you might just land yourself in deep ****, don't try this at home—you were to jailbreak your iPod, and somehow "acquire" a copy of iMaschine somewhere other than the App Store, it will most likely:

    1. Crash on startup
    2. Not run at all
    3. Not run properly

So, unfortunately, I think you're out of luck.

Though I know there are those that would, I personally would do nothing of the latter thing you mentioned.
And though I would have been happy to run and use iMaschine with the knowledge I wouldn't get support from NI, acquiring it that way to have no support from NI is not my style.

But yes, I was thinking the same thing that I'm out of luck on this one (though without the specifics of what would happen). Never mind. Just have to wait until I've got the spare cash to either upgrade my phone or buy an iPad then. Some time next decade perhaps. :p

i think it will work... I have an ipad 1gen... apps that they say won't work on a first gen usually does... for example Imovie i purchased that app and i'm running it with no problems... so when NI releases IMaschine I'll purchase it personally... if it doesn't work then at least i know when i do upgrade to a new ipad or ipod touch i'd have it... but i think it would work...

It depends. If iMaschine calls functions that are in the iOS4.2 SDK but aren't in earlier versions then it probably won't work.

Why did you not add a time line drum beat program like in the machine version easier to edit drums this way than to try to play them All in time with just pads? Is it coming soon I hope?

VERIZON users currently stuck at iOS 4.2.10

thanks for the reply. I did call APPLE and now know that Verizon users are currently only on iOS 4.2.10, but next week will be able to update to v5, and all will be well. I can wait 5 days no problem. I didn't understand why my brand new iphone wouldn't update to 4.3, but I guess it's a carrier thing or something. ATT users are up to 4.3.5, but iOS 5 will level the playing field next week, and I'll then be able to install iMaschine

Sorry, I wasn't being smart. iOS 5 isn't for general use. Running iMaschine on iOS 4.3 will solve the problem. Your question was directed at NI...
... but this is a user forum. If you really feel it necessary to ask NI why their software doesn't work on a beta OS not currently available to their customers, you can get hold of them at tech support over there... <<<
However, if you can hang on 2 days until iOS 5 is released then you'll be on the same page as everybody else.
