    Hello everyone,
So I just got a 2011 Macbook Pro, it has 8 gb of ram and a 250 gb ssd. My problem is I already have all of my adobe stuff, final cut, etc. installed and I only have about 100 gb left. I also use fl studio so in order to do that on a mac I have to bootcamp it, which requires me to split the hard drive. So I have about 50 gb left on my windows and mac side, omnisphere alone is 40 gb. I do have a 3 tb external hard drive, my plan was to install all of my vsts onto there but I read online that I should install the vsts on my internal ssd and put the libraries on the external, but I don't even think I'll have enough room for that. I just ordered KU10 also which will be here monday, I was planning on installing the whole thing on my external but I'm not sure if that would work. Would I have to install the plugins onto the internal and the libraries onto the external? I also want to install KU10 on my mac and windows side (so I can use the plugins in fl), so KU10 will be installed twice on my external? Will this work? Does anyone have any tips on how to do this?
    Thanks guys
    Justin

In princip you can install what you wan't on whatever drive you wan't. The performance can vary. Please search the forum for info about that.
And there can be more or less difficulties when changing install path. You need some more computer skills i would say. I would have my application installs on the internal drive like other applikations. And the plug-ins don't take a super lot disk space.

Have samples on a very fast drive. If your external drive only is 5400 rpm, then i would'nt have samples on that. I recommend a SSD for samples. The faster your drive is, the more it do not matter if you install samples and applikations/ plug-ins on the same drive. But spreading workload is often a good idea.
A lot also depend on how you work. Bt for instance samples really benefit from a very fast drive.

Have things that benefit of a fast drive be on a fast drive. External drives are not as fast as internal, and depend on the connection speed too. Again please read the forum about that. Also read about your equipment.

I can't answer your questions about installing both for MAC and for Windows.

This is the best i can do. I recommend you search more info.

Yes, the recommended method is to install the programs and plugins to your internal HDD and the libraries to a second (external) HDD. The libraries will take up most of the installation space. For Komplete 10 Ultimate, the applications and plugins alone roughly need around 3 - 5 GB of disc space.

The applications and plugins must be installed for each system because of the different operating systems (Windows, OSX).
I only shared the same library folders between two Windows machines once, but I guess it might also be possible sharing them between Windows and OSX.

As example, you can try the following:
Make sure that your external HDD (where you want the libraries to be installed to) is formatted with a file system that can be read and written by both Windows and OSX (infos about this can be found on the web). if you need to format your external HDD for this, keep in mind that this process will delete all existing files on your external HDD.
    1. Windows system: Install Komplete and install the libraries on the external HDD.
    2. On the second system (OSX), during the installation process, deselect or uncheck all the libraries and only select the applications and plugins for installation. After installation, run the standalone applications (Kontakt, etc.) and set the library paths to the existing library folders on your external HDD from the first install.
    3. Test if you can use the same libraries on both systems (Windows and OSX)...

Some points to keep in mind:
    • Probably use the same version number of the applications/plugins (of Kontakt, etc.) on both Windows and OSX to avoid version conflicts of the libraries (something like 'library requires newer application version' ...)
    • Probably use the same plugin-format (VST) on both Windows and OSX. Not sure if there might be any library problems when using the VST-plugin on Windows and the AU-plugin on OSX of the same application.
    • If sharing the libraries don't work this way, you can always run the installer on the second computer again, select the libraries for installation and install them a second time to a new or different folder.

One more tip: If you plan to use a external HDD as Library Storage do yourself a favor and get a performant USB 3.0 disk.

I never had problems on KU9 streaming samples and libraries from a USB 2.0 but since I have upgraded to KU10 the newer stuff like Signal really asks for a 3.0 also a external powered USB Hub is a good investion at this point.

Hi there, I think I have similar Q - after installing applications I want from KU10, is it possible to load libraries from the external drive that was shipped to me (the KU10 drive)?

No you need to use the setup programm to install the libraries to a different external HDD ... there's an NI article explaining that in knowledgebase.
