Instrument volume when using keys is very quiet

    Hi all,

I'm new to the Komplete Kontrol, so there may be an easy fix for this that I'm not aware of. I just received my MK2 61 the other day and I was hooking it up with my Maschine MK3 and when I press the keys down on the keyboard, I can barely hear the notes. If I press really hard I can hear it. If I play the exact same thing on the Maschine, it works fine. I can't imagine this was shipped like this without an easy setting change, otherwise the keyboard doesn't really do much if you can't hear the output.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Just click the fixed velocity button and it should all stay the same

Thanks for the reply. I tried that and it worked, it just sounded rather blah since every note was the exact same velocity.

One workaround I found is to set the dynamics parameter to -100%.

Thanks Musmus. I haven't tried that. Is that a setting within the instrument itself (like in Kontakt)?

Yes, bobbslo. You can find it in the settings of The Gentlemen instrument, for example.

Ok I'll give that a try. So I'm assuming this is an actual problem for others as well based on your response, correct? If so, that is unbelievable! I don't understand what everyone is using their Komplete Kontrol for with this issue since it's literally the number one thing needed on a midi controller (to hear the sound, that is). It makes no sense at all.

    Anyway, thanks for the reply!

I totally agree with you. It's definitely far from ideal and a real shame for NI to release a new, but obviously unfinished, hardware like this.

Do you know if NI has at least acknowledged the issue? I guess I'm wondering if there is going to be a fix in place, or if I should look at possibly returning mine and getting a different midi controller. Just seems like this problem would be identified in Day 1 of QA testing.

Well, I don't really know. Nobody seems to know. NI is absolutely NOT open about anything they are doing as it seems to me. I read lots of threads here since I bought mine but I already lost track of what's rumours and what's actually acknowledged by NI people, if any.

It's either returning the controller or having faith, hope and lots of patience, I guess. I personally decided to give it a shot and hope for the best as I'm really pleased with the build quality of the device. If NI doesn't fix stuff here in a reasonable amount of time it'll probably heavily backfire at them - which I honestly don't hope for the better of all owners of these keyboards. There's so much potential here.

Yeah I absolutely love everything else. With those 2 screens on both my KK and Maschine, everything is right at my fingertips. It's awesome. Which is why it's so bizarre this problem exists. I watched dozens of video's of people using the MK2 and everyone was raving about it. If this problem existed with them, it would've been noted somewhere on at least someone's video. Makes me think perhaps this isn't an issue for everyone.

You do know you can hit the shift key and rotate the 4D encoder to increase/decrease volume, right?

Like the link says that Sound22 posted, it's because of the absolutely horrendous velocity curve that NI have shipped the mk2 with, whilst eliminating the option to change it, unlike the mk1. I think its coming in an update. No idea when, no idea if.

Yes this sounds more like a volume settings issue, not velocity per se. It should not be any quieter than it is in Maschine, to me that suggests you just have the volume down too low in KK.

If anything the naff velocity curve makes everything sound too loud too quickly, it's not subtle enough

On the mk2? I couldn't have more of an opposite problem with mine, you have to smash the keys to reach anything over 70.

I have exactly the same issue using a Bass Station 2 as a controller.

I'm experiencing something similar using an S61 MK2 keyboard: the previews are at normal volume but when I load a sampled instrument it's very quiet. If I record into my DAW, levels average around -30dbfs (and I'm not trying to play quietly). If I turn the level up high enough to hear on my heaphones or monitors, any previews (e.g., different presets for the same instrument) are so deafening I'm worried that I'm damaging my monitors (or my ears!); I have to remember to turn down the volume before changing presets. What would explain the previews playing at a "normal" level but loaded instruments playing much more quietly? Are there separate volume control levels for previews vs. the loaded instruments?

    Turn down your prehear volume
