    safe a little longer

some interesting things presented with IPAD. I remain a bit skeptical as to the nature of the interface (no physical feedback, eyes off the device, etc.). That said, i concede what i see at times keeps me curious.

That said, one might want to save little, at least to the degree one wants to use it as a usable interface. Upfront, going for 16GB, especially for music is a hard thing for me to rationalize, better 64GB. hm... $500?,Six IPADs and pints, I think not, so...
credit card ready, prepare the cash.;)

Have you all seen the Alesis iO Dock?
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYlufva7ppM"]YouTube - Alesis Studio Dock.mp4[/ame]
It's got XLR/1/4" audio inputs with phantom power and has 2 MIDI ports (in/out) as well as a USB MIDI port and even a video output. Compatible with all apps that use CoreMIDI.

Am I the only person who still thinks that the iPad is a pointless device? I mean Ive got a great laptop and I have a smartphone why do I want one of these? I'm just not seeing it.

    Akai SynthStation 49
The SynthStation app shown here is a native iPad version that seems to be a step up from the original iPhone version with a much quicker navigation and more controls per page.

A tablet will never replace a laptop for certain tasks, as much as a tablet will never replace a smart phone for certain tasks, and a laptop will never replace a desktop for certain tasks... The ipad is great for what it does.

Making a tool that can be extremely useful, is not about power. It's about flexibility and workflow. And this is where iPad strikes a double blow. There is no denying that the touchscreen gives a completely new experience to the user. Just take a look at iPad controllers like Konkreet Performer. Multitouch nodes give you a level of control and craziness that you just cannot get with knobs and faders.

It's no suprise that the iPad has given birth to a lot of apps that do not exist for the Mac or iPhones/iPod Touches and of course not even for PCs. Raising the size of the multitouch screen to 10 inches was a game changer, since before iPad there was not even a single product that could compete. Now the market is littered with multitouch tablets, I think that alone is enough proof of how groundbraking iPad really is. It makes something huge from nothing.

    Just got an iPad 2.
    It's really awesome.
The iMS-20 blew me away. Very impressive.
And the Ac-7 core Daw controller is amazing too.
Tried it with live, Logic and Protools And it works perfectly across my home wireless network. Even better across an Ad-hoc network.
The addition of core midi support in Ios 4.2 for music apps means that it is really going to take off for music applications.

I've also started a Maschine template for touch osc using Osculator as the Server that interprets the Osc messages to midi and keyboard commands to the Maschine.

Basically anything that can be controlled by the computer keyboard or Midi in Maschine can be mapped to a touch osc command.
I have pattern/group selection screen, a group mixer, pads, xy controller for the macros, scene selection, grid settings, play and stop, undo etc. etc. All mapped to the ipad.

The xy controller for the macros is great, as is the mixer.

For anybody that is even remotely interested in music and technology it's a no-brainer.

A Multi daw (that works) controller for 10 dollars? How can you say no?

Kraster, any chance you can share you OSC template for Maschine, I am considering buying this app shortly, it would be useful to have this template if it works with all projects.

I have just got the Ipad 2 as well and the apps are great although the device and apps are expensive it is great for music production. iMS20 is so in depth! There is so much sequencing, sampling and synth software for it but I still love mt Maschine :D

Point taken but the cheapest model is 499, about the same price as the Maschine.
A lemur or dexter Touch screen controller is about 1500 dollars.

Exactly. And used original iPads are selling for much cheaper.

The iPad has only been out a little over a year and it has already sold close to 10 million. And it's still early days. It's like with "regular" computer/laptops that people already have. So they're not factoring in the cost of their computer when they look at the price for software. Same idea with iPad apps, just much, much cheaper.

You'll need to get osculator too to run the template with Maschine and it will need a specific Maschine session to run on. Not all aspects of the touchosc template are universal.

Osculator sits between Maschine and touchosc as an interpreter.
Touchosc generates the osc data and osculator passes those messages onto Maschine as either midi data (notes for the pads, program changes for scenes and cc's for the Macros) or keyboard shortcuts. The cc's for the Macros are project specific on Maschine so they won't be universal.

Currently, I have eight pads set up as sound slots with the other eight pad-linked to the first eight to reroute messages back to touch osc. So the pads on touch osc light up when they are hit on the Maschine.

There are some things that I can't route like record, for instance, as there is no Keyboard command or midi command for record.
But this kind of stuff is better on the Maschine anyway.
The best part is the control of Macros. For a mixer or fx parameters via an xy controller or fader/knob.

I'll upload the required files when I tweak it a bit.

You couldn't have said it better bro!
I bought the iPad mainly for music control. I bought it used, and it's the best deal I've made.

I'm fiddling wit dJay app. No need for me to buy a big turntable for occasional scrathing.

Plus ... it does more than that.

I'm using Griid for Ableton live, Pianist Pro (I now have a wireless midi keyboard), dJay for scratching, NLOG Synth (it comes very close to an analog synth), Touch OSC, Amplitube & Ampkit for guitar practice... I mean... this thing was made FOR ME ! :D

Yeah, I had beta tested it. Not buying it though, as I already have it on the iPad and can sample it. I bought Reason instead. ;) Gotta love that Thor !

Very interesting video of iPad2 running Pianist Pro controlling Maschine, offering some unusual expressions:

    also polychord and midipads.

planning to get second ipad for an air display in which to control maschine interface and vsts. and then a huge chesterfield sofa.

lot of misconception about ipad. only from non owners though.

    the thing is great.

nice of noiserot to inform the folks.
