I had recently received MASCHINE MIKRO and the software doesn't seem to be the most friendly toward linear editing. I know it isn't meant to be but I was wondering if i should use Logic instead.

it might be worth trying to arrange in maschine for a while and see what kind of results you get. i prefer to keep worklow simple so i can finish tracks quickly.

having said that... i don't put my songs together in maschine. but many people do and they have good results.

I find it actually fairly easy to write full tracks with Maschine... I actually much prefer it to "traditional" DAW's like Ableton Live or Logic...
    1. create a scene
    2. Add some groups
    3. make some patterns
    4. create a new scene
    5. duplicate patterns
    6. modify
    7. repeat until you get a song
For me it works out wonderfully!

I have really struggled to get to grips with Ableton when I've tried it. I do everything in Maschine and have no problem doing so.

It is certainly possible to build a full song idea in Maschine. I've done it a few times. I will say, when I plan on automating parameters throughout the whole song (i.e. Long Volume fade ins over several scenes, or changing the cutoff on a bass instrument to create expressive changes through the piece) I tend to do what I can in Maschine, then either bounce instruments to a DAW or simply run Maschine as a plugin in a DAW to get the final result. If you look on youtube, there's some great tutorials on creating full songs in Maschine.

I found that linear recording is very possible in MASCHINE. Mastering is best done in a DAW.

Maschine gives your brain a work out though, if you make the songs in it. That's how I feel. And as every workout it might be harder at the beginning, but ultimately it's the best for your health/music abilities . Now I'm not lost anymore as I used to be regarding song arrangement. Now I pretty much know what the arrangement will be like before I even start composing.
    Just saying.
Having said that, I still use Live for some 'mastering' and compression boosting as I like some of the preset 'mastering'/'compression' that come with LIve even though I only have the limited version coming with the Akai Apc 40... However, still most of the mix down I do make in Maschine and some songs are completely done in Maschine.

I compose my stuff using Maschine Studio and Maschine 2.x.x software. There was a little bit of an intuitive learning curve for me, mainly with patterns, but after working with it for a while, it's become very natural to me to compose entire songs using Maschine. I tend to begin with fleshing out drum patterns first and once I have something solid, I'll build on top of it. I usually begin with four bars and once I have a good riff flowing, I'll duplicate the scene three times to build a solid sixteen bars for a verse section. I'll make subtle changes in the patterns to keep the verses interesting. Once I have a solid sixteen bar verse section built, I'll begin building around it. Sometimes I'll put together a rough intro section at this stage. I'll begin making decisions about what needs to be built around the verse section - does it need a pre-chorus to set up any changes happening in the chorus section? That kind of thing. I tend to compose the chorus the following day using the same instruments - but I like to come at it fresh - yet still giving my new verse time to live in my head for a while. It also acts as a bit of litmus test for me, too. If that verse can live in my head for a day or so, or if I can come back to it a day later and find it interesting, or even come up with some changes to make it more interesting, then it's a keeper. If I listen to it the next day, and I'm like, "Meh, what was I thinking when I did this?", then I just push it aside and try something new, or, *LOL* go back to something I pushed aside last week to see if it grabs me and makes me want to work with it.

That's a quick description of my composition process in Maschine. Not too technical, and it probably sounds pretty fun. It does to me anyway. It's supposed to be fun. If it isn't enjoyable, why bother? I love working with Maschine.

I'll go on further to say, for me, there isn't any right or wrong. If you're using your mouse more than the controller, so what? Personally, I use both to get the job done. The question for me isn't about how proficient you are at tweaking knobs - the question is - how good is your song?

    Exactly!

Maschine gives me back a long forgotten feeling. Writing songs. With maschine stand alone is like a sheet of paper. Sketching ideas and working out. For me, this is such a relief. Twelve bars blues. An intro, there a turnaround ... All as much as twenty years ago. but just heard immediately. The finished song I take then in our studio. There, which is then processed into a product, so other instrumentation mixed new and then mastered. Could also be done in the machine, but that's just not my job;).
If one, with paper and pencil familiar, machine is simple and straightforward to write songs.
This of course is justm my humble opinion.
