Is it similar in that you can make your instruments etc?

Sure, you can make synths of all sorts, samplers, granular samplers, delays, guitar amp emulators, chorus effects, flangers, beatboxes, sequencers, MIDI generators, soundscape generators, probability driven music machines, etc. etc.

The major benefit of Reaktor is you can use the plugin in any DAW, whereas the current version of Max only runs in Ableton or stand-alone. I also happen to think Reaktor sounds much better.

Max's strong point is having arguably better facilities for advanced programmers (like javascript), and a visual component called Jitter.

Thanks, that sounds like it would be fun to mess around with. I assume that creations are able to be shared with other users? I saw a user library somewhere and think I checked it out a while ago but I don't remember if there were Reaktor instruments and devices there.

Yes, there's a few stuff in the library.

Yeah, the librarys a bit skimpy, but you might find the odd nugget in there.

    :)

Only joking. There's 3,000 + user created ensembles, and there is some truly astounding stuff in there. I know a few people who were persuaded to buy Reaktor after they saw the size and scope of the library. I download a few ensembles and play around every Saturday, it's like having Christmas Day once a week.

You need to have a Reaktor license to download ensembles, but you can have a look round it here:

Thanks, I guess if I ever get Komplete then I will have a lot more stuff to play around with than I thought!

Only a few short years ago you'd have had to spend $20-25k US (no exaggeration) to get what you can now get with Komplete for a few hundred dollars. If you know what you're doing, it's an absolute steal.

M4L is great fun primarily for programming MIDI devices, and is at some theoretical level more "open" from a pure programmer's point of view than Reaktor, but there's nothing like the resources in the Reaktor user library available. The built-in tutorials for M4L are also very good.

Nearly 12 years since I bought my first version, and it STILL feels like that ;-) No other software purchase I can think of even comes close to the frequent and random acts of inspiration the UL provides!

    I love this quote :)

In other news, scheming is underway relating to some forthcoming Reaktor community stuff, watch this space.
