Ok, I know it's a dumb one and you guys are probabily tired of answering the same question, but before buying a new audio device I would like to know if there is a possible way to use Guitar Rig DECENTLY with Sound Blaster live audio board.
I wrote decently because I know with the tests I did that it is possible to use GR with soundblaster live things but it is not playable due to hundreds of problems: latency, clicks, and so on.
It is to say that I have my junky SB card installed with resident XP drivers thus not having any updating either from Creative or indipendent developer (asio4all, and so on....).
So this is a call for soundblaster live / GR users that I read succeded in using this audio board:
Can you please tell me how to use this card with the following system,
    AMD athlon 2 ghz
    512 mb ram
    Maxtor HD at 7200 rpm
    Win xp pro edition
    Adobe Audition 1.5
    Sony Vegas 5.0

Many thaks to all in advance

Try asio4all (works on top of wdm driver, very easy to install and use), or kx ( replaces existing driver , more difficult to install and use, but very much powerfull).

You should at least obtain decent latency

I happyly used both of them for my asio software before switching to an audio card with better converters.

If you choose kx, be aware that asio inputs works only at 48 Khz (in order to avoid 44 KHz -> 48 KHz conversion)
it could be a problem if you wish to use GR recorders.

Thanks, Clevermind, for your quick reply. I really appreciate it. I know that eventually I have to buy a new audio device, but at least, if I have to get rid of SBlive, I want to make sure that I cannot do anything with it. The thing is that I'm afraid of doing someting wrong with these two solution you mentioned, that is to make my system instable. Do you think that if I encounter problems it'll be easy to switch back to were I was?

    Thanks again

asio4all won't hurt your system, and you have nothing to reinstall if you want to go back (in fact you can let it installed).
Don't desinstall your audio driver since it uses it.
You can even use it with integrated audio hardware that comes with many motherboards.
it has an option to resample 44 KHz to 48 KHz (SB cards always resamples 44 Khz to 48 Khz internally, that's the reason why kx does not allow 44 KHz for inputs).
This driver is exclusive , that means you can't use another audio app or Microsoft GS Synth while you use it in GR, for example.

Kx is not exclusive, but it could be more tricky to install/desinstall (apart the 48 Khz problem that I have mentionned) , and its power is not worth for what you want to do.

Thank you again, man. But what you mean I cannot use another audio application? Of course, to record my guitar with whatsoever plug in like amplitube or guitar rig I need to have an audio software like the mentioned vegas or audition. Are these to be consider audio applications? Sorry for the question but I'm a newby to computer technology and wouldn't like to make a mess.....

you will have to load GR plugin into your audio app (tha't the the normal way to use it with an audio app, if you don't want to use standalone version recorders ).

By audio apps, I mean all audio apps (Windows Media Player,...) and midi apps using Microsoft GS synth device , not only asio audio apps.

Ok then....I guess I will have to give it a try and see how it goes.

I really thank you again man for all your help. Eventually I'll contact you via this forum in case of troubles.....

    Ok,

some audio apps have an an option for releasing audio driver in background ,if you want to switch to another audio app, but it is not useful in your case.

You will possibly have to mute reading input (yes !) in Windows mixer to avoid doubling asio sound with normal sound.

Clevermind, I tried asio4all and they worked flawlessly. I can get to play my guitar with 10 ms and less latency with a junk audio board like mine. Thank you again.
I got only one problem I could get rid of. I'm going to post a new thred for this, though.

But for asio4all your help was very precious....

I forgot to mention that you can try the DS driver for Guitar Rig standalone, and the DS or WDM driver for your sequencers (if they accept them).

MME drivers have too much latency for all soundcards.

Clevermind, can you tell me where to find these drivers?

I think that you have already a wdm driver installed, since asio4all couldn't work without.

    You should have WDM listed as a choice for a driver type in your GR standalone;

it is possible that you don't have a DS driver (maybe it is part of SB genuine drivers)

I mentionned this only for completeness , since not all audio software can work with DS or WDM, but many can work with asio.

asio4all is a pretty good workaround for this case, and also for when an asio only software has a problem with a soundcard specific asio driver (like GR with N-Force soundcard asio driver, for example).

I have a Soundblaster Live also, and when I installed the ASIO4ALL, guitar rig doesn't see the input.

I'm running to my line in.

Any suggestions? Oh, and I'm running 2k

asio4all should work on Windows 2K

If you have selected asio4all in GR, check which inputs are available in "Audio +Midi Settings/Routing/Inputs", then select them
    if they were not already.

Also, open asio4all config panel within GR and check if the inputs are in the "running" state (green).

If you are using GR standalone only , try the Direct Sound driver, but you will get more latency.

Well, I have the inputs set properly, but once I have guitar rig set to ASIO the input in the ASIO4ALL goes unavailable all of the sudden.

Should I have ANY of the midi options enabled? All of them are disabled currently. My inputs are SB live 9000 1 and 2, and that's the same as my output.

Soundcard is ASIO (ASIO4ALL) at 48k

Do you launch asio4all config panel within GR ?

Are any other input devices (like a webcam microphone) present ?
if so, it could prevent soundcard inputs to work if input frequencies are not the same (stop this device in asio4all panel or try to set GR to the same frequency).

For midi , don't select Microsoft GS Synth output device, it prevents asio4all to work.

Also, don't launch any other audio apps (or midi apps using MS GS Synth) while using an audio app running asio4all

asio4all inputs and outputs must be running (green),or you will not see them in GR inputs and outputs.

Thanks. I realized that the custom thing in my Creative Mixer (drum and bass setting) was stopping it.

    Ok,

as I told to Michael, try to select "Use Hardware Buffer", your cpu will be grateful (if it works).

Clevermind, here's Michael. I've seen that my thread has grown a lot and that means you have helped use our junky sb with the spectacular GR. Ok I know the use of sb will put us anyway into some obvious limitations but at least we can fairly play GR without the need to purchase a 200 € and more audio device.

    Thanks again and good Easter
