Hi. I use Traktor Pro 2 on a pc , but don't use iTunes. I manage my collection on an external hard drive.
Does this Traktor DJ require iTunes to import the music collection or is there another way?
The intro videos don't explain how the collection is available on the ipad and on a pc.

There must be many Traktor Pro users who refuse to use iTunes.

    Thanks

But you need iTunes to put the tracks on your iPad no?

You don't have to use it at all, it just has to be there.

There is no other way than using iTunes.

Hi Kieran, yes, it seems I need iTunes to put tracks onto the ipad, but I don't use iTunes on my pc, and therefore don't have an iTunes managed Traktor collection.

Do I then need to figure out iTunes for pc ? And then import all my tracks into iTunes on my pc before I can use them on Traktor DJ ?

I only used iTunes to transfer tracks from my Traktor Laptop to my iPad.

I pointed Traktor Pro to an empty iTunes Library .xml file (my Traktor library is not in this location) then dragged tracks from my separate Traktor library folder to iTunes then to my iPad.

    Hope this helps.

FYI: For metadatasync to work you HAVE to use the same iTunes library as the one your Traktor Pro uses.

You dont need all your tracks in iTunes, just the ones that you wish to use on the iPad.

I have never used iTunes with Traktor before. The first time any of my tunes went anywhere near iTunes was today.

I do all my tag editing through a 3rd party tag editor before they go in to my Traktor Library (Tag & Rename).

If it wasn't for this my tracks would have never gone in to iTunes, EVIL

Frankly, I am very opposed to Apple myself as I dislike their closed-garden approach to everything. iTunes supports just a few formats and standards as decided by central planner Apple. And that's it. I understand why some power users refuse to use such a limited product.

BUT: Traktor DJ is an iPad app only. When making an iPad app, it's completely logical that NI sticks to the things that are standard in Apple-land. And particularly, Traktor DJ and Metasync are NOT meant to be general-purpose cloud integration for Traktor. Again, there's just an iPad app. Yes, I'm a bit disappointed, too, but that's the feature traktor devs decided to add...

Metadatasync via Dropbox is nothing new. DJ Player has it and it can play tunes that are stored in Dropbox which is pretty cool actually. I wish NI would implement that so I could have a cloud collection to expand the limited storage on the iPad.

NI simply do things the safe way. I have no issues with iTunes as a music organising system.

and, btw, i didn't mean to bash on NI by saying that "traktor DJ is just an ipad app." i think it's a very cool first step, and i hope further things will follow (such as full cloud integration of traktor as well as an android port of traktor dj).

I agree Karlos , I have a 16gb ipad 2 , with about 6gb free. The rest is used by synths and drum machines. That doesn't leave me with much on board storage for tracks to play with.

What if your traktor pro on mac doesn't use itunes, it just pulls tunes from your collection, how does metadata work (or not) in this instance for the ipad app?

    That will not work.

You have to add the tracks via iTunes because Traktor DJ syncs with your iTunes collection and your Traktor collection.

    You "have" to use iTunes.

All the data is in the mp3s themselves, yeah?

So i just need to put any wanted tunes in iTunes for use with the ipad app and if i make amendments in my traktor collection to these (whilst using the traktor pro software normally on my mac) the tags in iTunes will update and be cues etc be recognised on iPad

Yeah you dont need to have all your music in iTunes. Just the tracks you want on your iPad.

Any changes will automatically be sync by Traktor DJ after you perform 'Metadata Sync" in Traktor or Traktor DJ.

In Traktor it has to be done manually.
In Traktor DJ it syncs at automatic intervals or can be force synced.
