Pretty neat but my sounds are flat? No depth. Do I have to eq each stock sound and compress it and add reverb and such to get actual warmth to the kicks and snares?

Also, I used reason once a long time ago and you could make a beat and then change it up within the patterns and paste those directly to a window where you could see your whole song composed. Being new to Maschine, is this possible or do I have to build off of one Group and make a whole song off of that? Forgive me I am new and have no knowledge of how to do anything.....so I'm sorry if this post is in the wrong area or if there is a section that explains all of this.

If someone can direct me to a tutorial perhaps that explains some or all of this?

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah the stock sounds are gonna need some tweaking, I noticed that right away as well. It can be a rewarding challenge though, so don't get frustrated. That being said, everything you put into Maschine, be it stock sample or not, is going to need some fine tuning to make sure your mix sits right.

Here's a tip, before starting any project turn the volume of your Groups down to around -5dB, this will ensure ample headroom for your mix.

As for making a track with Maschine, the window on the top of the screen is for laying out "Scenes" which are composed of "Patterns"...Patterns being the midi loops you record into the bottom window. Definitely not as visually pleasing as Reason, but you can definitely produce intricate compositions with it.

I'd also recommend opening up all the sample Projects that Maschine comes with, studying these will help you understand how the program works.

tbh i kinda like how some of the kits need work, much better than someone deciding what processing you need...

I actually was going to do that same thing, I am still there :) the atmosphere is great, the fellow Maschine users over there are great. Excellent community well worth the $10 a month.

    1) RTFM
    2) Learn to use compression, EQ's and dynamics
    3) Have fun!

    1 & 3 are pretty vital, 2 is optional :)

I was pretty overwhelmed when I first got Maschine. Scenes, Groups and Patterns - all new to me. Being so used to how Pro Tools works, it took a while to get used to Maschine. There are many, many great kits and sounds included, and the "trick" is to use the right ones for each specific song.

I recommend that you spend some time with it. It's the only way to get a feel for the sounds and how to use it efficiently. I often stack kicks and snares. One for bass, one for snap, and maybe one extra for articulation and character.

Have you tried reading it more than once and/or flicking through looking out for words you like the sound of? I'm generalising here as I assume most people have a very similar approach to RTFM'ing.

There are a tonne of instructional videos freely available on Youtube alone which I highly recommend you watch alongside any of the NI-provided manual(s) and then there are the unofficial and/or premium content sites which will offer tutorials and articles on how to get to grips with just about every aspect of Maschine.

You can, sort of, use Maschine in the sense you originally mentioned (it's been a LONG time since I used Reason) but you'll have to use Maschine alongside another (proper) DAW. You can drag out patterns from Maschine as either Audio or MIDI clips and drop them into folders and/or DAW channels.

    +1 :)

so wait... what gen are us 30 yr olds? I never have a problem getting my drums and sounds to knock... if your not new to making music you should be familiar with the concepts to achieve this... imho maschine makes it easier than any gear I've really ever had to make it knock hard. that includes my mpc's and asr's... if you are over at Maschinetutorials.com grab the multi-fx pack that I posted and have a look at the drums that I included in that pack... you can check some of the sculpting I did on em (if you like that dirty underground boom bap sound)
and also peep the maschine instrument pack I just dropped over there.
