To the best of my knowledge, kontakt 2 comes with impulse responses for the convolution reverb, but I can't find the folder they're in. I installed the kontakt library from the installer cd, but chose not to install the sample dvd, because I wouldn't be using it anyways. I did comb through the dvd, but didn't see the folder. Could someone please tell me where they are located?

    Look in Kontakt 2/presets/effects/convolution...

Cheers, will have a look here in a minute.

I'm not sure why you would be looking for the IRs themselves, as you really don't deal with them on that level for the most part.

From what I understand, you utilize an IR by INVOKING a CONVOLUTION (which uses an IR file). You get a CONVO by selecting an effect ("Convo" is the short name in that drop-down list) and then by selecting a "Preset" of your choice within the CONVO settings.

I have just put together a DRAFT Kontakt 2 Tutorial on this topic for your perusal: HERE. What is there is FRESH off my "community spirit" voluntary non-profit desk and comments, corrections and other contributions are heartily encouraged. I will be publicizing this more as we confirm that the version is worth showing to additional folks.

KevinKauai: Isnt it true that using the built in convo-engine in K2 isnt as cpu-friendly as using a plugin, SIR or commercial, in a host?

I don't pretend to be a complete expert on everything convolution/impulse response, but it would seem logical that the Convo processing in Kontakt 2 is neither much faster nor slower than an "outboard" processor of equivalent complexity. That said, I have found MAJOR differences between the two techniques of applying Convolution individually (instrument by instrument) as opposed to the "group" method described in my new TUTORIAL here.

That makes a certain amount of sense, doesn't it? In the one case you may have 5 or 6 separate Convo "engines" going as you apply them to separate instruments, whereas in the "group" method you are simply siphoning off part of the dry signal from various instruments into ONE "pipe", doing the Convo processing on that and passing it on.

    i hope this helps ... :) KevinKauai

    Interesting!

Just to clarify, with your "group" method, you´re only using one convolution "engine" right?

Have you tried using 2 or more "engines" for different groups (with different IRs, maybe recorded in different positions (depth-positions or panned differently)?

I guess using only 1 computer (as I do) doesnt really have enough power to use 2 or more convolutions in realtime at the same time. My guess is that method will be used in the postpro.

    What do you think, KevinKauai?

I was wanting to use them with SIR, since I only use Kontakt for drums and an occasional synth part, and use Reaktor for the rest of my sample playback, and would like the same reverb on all parts. I'm getting a "dns sensor error" message on the link, but the idea of running more than a couple reverbs on the same project is absurd, since they will use up so much processing power.

Wouldn't it would be nice to be able to switch between a mode for light real-time convolution reverb and a special setting for bounce-mode where you could use multiple cpu-heavy positional IRs?

    Indeed..!

Personally I´m not used to alot of postpro, I like to mix as I compose. But maybe I´ll have to learn how to compose using some cpu-friendly reverb (Ambience vst?) and use heavy convolution when I`m done composing. *sigh*

It's a nice thought, but I think it may make it pretty hard to mix down, since the difference could be pretty drastic, especially with a "light mode."
