You can manually "keymatch" by using keylock + key-value-knob. Use your ears and know your tracks :)

Uhm, ye, I think we all know that that is possible, BUT what does that have to do with us wanting a keydetection code within the software?;)

Ummm. Mixing in key can allow for mixing things that otherwise sound horrible together... For any genre of music, not just ones that have not had any innovation in ages. As for why trance dj's tend to mix in key it has more to do with the structure of the music rather than some attempt to sound like they are doing something new...

But doesn't have to be same key. Can be different keys that have many common notes... C and D are pretty compatible for example... Relative major and minor keys can also be compatible too...

This can be done by ear... Play with the pitch until it sounds good... T odevelope the ear, grab a guitar and experiment with notes that sound decent together and ones that have terrible dissonance. Before long you'll be hearing this in the headphones...

More ear training: If you have a guitar sitting around the house or a casio keyboard you can match the notes you hear in the music... i.e. copy the melody line... This combined with a simple book on scales in different keys will allow you to determine the key. A certain level of musical knowledge is needed but I definitely recommend developing this ability. Before long you'll be doing it by ear. There are also reverse lookup apps for iphone/touch/ ipad that allow you to enter some of the known notes and it will spit out the possible keys if you prefer over a scale book.

I agree that it would be a convenient feature but features are never as useful as knowledge and skill...

I have an idea... How about a forum feature that helps one to not look like an opinionated ***?

Beatgrids are already flexible if you map beat grid options to your controller... Then make adjustments to it on the fly as the song drifts. Also you can set multiple beatgrids that can compensate for minor drift problems. Or even simpler make minor adjustments to the phase meter to adjust for variances in the tempo. Set the beat grid in the middle of the song so that it splits the difference. For songs with big changes in tempo you can quantize in ableton live and then use tempo to slow it down manually in the 'slower' parts of the song. Or make a copy of the song and beat grid one for the slower passage and one for the faster then crossfade between the two when it gets to the slower part.

Personally I'd rather see NI focus on features that simplify life for the dj/musician and give more mixing possibilities, not replace the need for him/her to have some level of skill and/or musical training...

    Integrated Key Matching System.

I'm not sure of the quality of their detection but Algoriddim have put a very nice implementation of Harmonic Mixing into djay 4, an app costing $19.99!

I love the way the circle of fifths is built into the browser (see pic). This would be great in Traktor Pro and based on the full Camelot system as opposed to the simplified version used in djay.

While it is not absolutely necessary to have detection in Traktor (this can be handled quite simply with Mixed In Key, my choice - Rapid Evolution 3, or other apps) filtering tracks within the browser based on Key Code using the wheel system would be great. And if this system could calculate pitch shift relative to BPM and highlight matches and Key relations ala Rapid Evolution that would really be something!

You can read more in the Digital DJ Tips review here.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Algoriddim or intend to purchase djay 4.

unless you want everyone to start paying for upgrades..just stop all talk of the camelot system...it costs $$ to license its usage and frankly key detection has nothing to do with DJ software... it is all to do with selection of music.

NI has tons of stuff in its core operational aspects that can be improved.. and frankly i hope they spend their money on improving performance, functionality and robustnness of the core product.. and not branch out into wannabee software..

honestly, if MiK had not gotten lots of famous DJ to do all these paid endorsements and youtube footage 90% of the folks here would never have heard nor considered the concept of "harmonic mixing"

you got ears.. use them .. if it sounds ok..just mix it.

    rant over!. :)

I think Native Instruments doesn't own a proper algorithm for that purpose.
It must be coded from scratch. Mybe they should buy Rapid Evolution from Mixshare...

This is most wanted feature for Traktor from years...and nothing is released from developers.

I am a big fan of KeyFinder by Ibrahim Sha'ath. You can find it here: http://www.ibrahimshaath.co.uk/keyfinder/
It works great, is simplistic AND it is open source! I supported Ibrahim by donating (it was the first time I ever donated on the internet) and if you like it please donate, too.

It does seem to work quite well, but am i right in assuming you have to manually key in the Key information into each track.

Mixing in key is a useful feature, but if used ad extremum could makes your sets sound a little on derivative side.

Nope! You can right click and write keys to tags. Additionally, there is an option of what tag to write and what values to write for the key (Allows you to implement Camelot yourself)
