    Hi,

I just purchased Komplete 8 online so it will be a few days before I receive it. In advance of trying to install it I have a few questions. At the moment I have Kontact 4 (4.2.4.5316) and the Scarbie J bass, Session strings, and Vir 1 sample libraries, Battery 3 (3.2.2), Kore player (2.1.2) and Reactor Player(5.5.1) as well as Prism (full version),and FM8 (1.2.0) installed on my system. I'm assuming that Kore player will be redundant once I install Komplete 8 and I'm wondering if I should remove it in advance of installing K8. Anything else I should do before installing K8? I also have Brush Artistry (Komplact 4 version) on my system and I believe there is a K5 verson of this now available which I will get . I'm running an iMac 2.8 (10.6.8) 4 gigs ram, Logic 9.1.7 in 32 bit mode. Thanks in advance.

    Hey Rainguitar,

I had the licenses of the products that I have, that are provided with the KU8, unregistered. I have read here on the forums that the KU8 singular license will trump the other licenses. I have unregistered the licenses so that I can sell the duplicate products. I recommend that you do the same.

I am not sure what will happen to the libraries though. I can only imagine that they will be updated and not over written.

Actually I was just about to ask a similar question. I have installed Komplete 8 but I still have the following which was bundled with Maschine:

    Guitar Rig 4 Essential
    Komplete Elements
    Komplete Elements Mk2
    Kontakt Player 4
    Kontakt Elements Selection R2
    Reaktor Elements Selection
    Abbey Roads 60s Drums Vintage

From what I understand it appears these particular products are no longer needed or are otherwise redundant. So is it OK if I remove them? Do I simply erase the folders? Note that I have no tracks currently that use anything from these products, or rather nothing I really want to keep at the moment. I simply want to keep my NI stuff clean and without redundant software.

Here guys, I believe this should answer your questions.. a gentleman upgrading from K8 to K8 Ultimate. Situation should be similar enough to still apply.

Also you can actually select or deselect individual products that you may or may not wish to install.

I still have Komplete Elements and Guitar Rig 4 for example. I see no reason why I should. In fact when I upgraded to Guitar Rig 5 why it didn't delete Guitar Rig 4 I don't know why? At any rate I have the feeling I have a lot of redundant stuff...Or do I?

Guitar Rig 5 is considered to be a different program from GR4 - so GR4 is not replaced or deleted. If it were deleted, then your projects that were using GR4 would not load GR5 automatically.

The same goes for Kontakt 5 and Kontakt 4.

You can change the association of the application from XXXXX 4 to XXXXX 5 by exporting the entire track. Then you delete XXXXXX 4 and then open the track again and point the files to the XXXXXX 5 location.

This is also spelled out in the K8/K8U setup manual.

**Also, I found out that the program libraries are overwritten if you choose to install them via K8U. I expect the same behavior with K8.

    further

I had a number of projects using samples from the Kontakt 4 library. I found that the samples in the Kontakt 5 library were very similar so all I did was to write down the samples I was using in Kontakt 4 and then choose the same samples from the Kontakt 5 library. Worked fine. Then I just deleted Kontakt 4 and the Kontakt 4 Library, made sure I had the updated versions of Scarbee J Bass and Session Strings and now everything works fine.

Yeah, it's just weird. I suppose the reason older versions are not overwritten to reflect newer ones is so people's projects don't get messed up but shouldn't newer versions be backward compatible? Meaning an older file opened in the latest version works but a newer file opened with older version doesn't.

Is there anything in Komplete Elements or Komplete Elements MK2 that isn't in Komplete 8?

Products that are not included in Komplete 8 will run OK only if you have Registered and Activated them. So you will need to get the (deregistered) Serial Number from the buyer.

I do not know that Komplete Elements can be deactivated or the voucher passed on - contact NI Registration Support to check.

This all has been very informative, thank you!
Not to be redundant but for my edification can one of you PLEASE confirm the below?

I just purchased the KU8 upgrade from K8. I have everything included in K8 as well as Razor which I bought separately. Everything is up to date and registered. The box I received has a big sticker entitled UPGRADE FOR OWNERS OF KOMPLETE 8. I'm assuming this has something to do with either the HD provided (only features new products) or the registration method. I can't say for sure as the manual reads as a new set of products entirely.

    1) When I mount the KU8 HD, the installer will automatically detect and deselect the products I already own, removing redundant files/folders. Y/N?

    2) This new serial number I received on the manual to activate & register my product should jive well with my existing S/N & registration. Y/N?

    3) I cannot move any folders other then sample libraries post installation and NI custom installation paths are notorious for not working properly. Y/N?

    4) It will be okay to move all NI sample libraries to an external HD once I've purchased one. Y/N?

    5) I will have to use both the CDs and KU8 HD in tandem when re-installing to another CPU and cannot just use the HD from here on out. Y/N?

    Thanks in advance.

    This is my understanding:

    (1) Auto-selection: No, you should select the product(s) to install yourself

    (2) Serial numbers: Yes, should be fine.

    (3) Paths: not answerable: yes, only the sounds folders can be moved: no - the other installation paths are fixed but they work OK

    (4) Moves: yes, as far as I know - as long as there is a way of telling each product the new location

    (5) Disks: Don't know, if the Upgrade has all the products in it, then you may not need the original disks, as long as both bundles are registered on your NI Account. Why not keep them all?

You're the man, Dark Star! Thank you for the prompt reply.

I just finished the install. It did warn me about three pre-existing apps: Guitar Rig, Kontakt, and Reaktor--which were automatically deselected from the installer window. So that was cool, I highly suggest anyone making this upgrade first update all their existing K8 apps in Service Center before continuing so this 'beware of downgrade' function kicks in. I wondered if I should deselect their Content as well, but then realized additional library material was included in the upgrade. I did notice some redundancies in the installer window but nothing seemed to 'double-up' once installed. Proved more intuitive then I imagined.

I must admit I hate the locations of things, nor have I found them all. If anyone has a handy 'path cheat sheet' for OS X that would be lovely. Thanks again.

The upgrade is exactly the same content as the full version. Only the price differs. Pretty much like an OS X installation in that regard. And an added serial number.

I installed the regular K8 yesterday, and I installed the programs first. I recommend doing this, just to be able to activate & update them quickly, then you can start the process of installing content separately. I had my coupon before the installation was done :p

All the instruments go in /Users/Shared/, and have reasonable path names which you can recognise at a glance. It's sort of strange to put them in a folder shared by all users on the system, but at least it keeps it out of the way from typical mistakes. Third party Kontakt stuff also get installed there, typically.

Apart from /Users/Shared/, the other locations are the system-wide audio plug-in folder (/Library/Audio/guess what) and ~/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/. There will also be the apps in /Applications, of course. Programs and add-ons haven't been entirely consistent about it, so there might be a Native Instruments folder and a few stray ones for individual apps.

    Moving stuff:
Best to keep the NI stuff where you installed it, but you can configure them in each individual program. Might be some more info on the forum, so just search if you really need the space. I just got a bigger drive. Third party instruments can go anywhere, and don't show up in the library anyway. If you're a fan of 8DIO, CineSamples etc. you can stick all of that on an external drive if you prefer.

I really dislike the Service Center. It just doesn't function as it should and NI should fix it. I'm tired of it showing me that I need to update software that I already have the latest version of. Furthermore I see no reason why old versions should be kept as oppose to overwritten. Guitar Rig 5 should overwrite Guitar Rig 4, etc. There should be no reason to have redundant files and programs.

SC is fine for me, at least on OS X. Somebody pointed out elsewhere that you could also tell it to not show a specific version, which tidies the list up a bit. There's "Hide selected updates" under the File menu in my version.

During the transition from GR4 to GR5 and Kontakt 4 to 5 they started to write new file formats. It would kill compatibility with some products we use (like Kore), or third-party patches. Be happy that new major versions are a different app, because when a new version is buggy you'll then have the previous major release as a fallback :)

I think it's a good policy to make major releases as safe an upgrade as possible. Since major releases are paid upgrades this makes sense in the context of updates too. 4.x versions don't see 5.x as updates, so they might as well be separate.
