    WD Black HD

The WD Black HDs have been very good for me but I did have a WD Green "storage" drive that died recently...

But the terms of their warranty is OK..

As far a laptop HD's go,the 7200 spin Hitachi with the 16 MB buffer is pretty good..

IF you have an eSata port,it streams faster than USB or Firewire....

I have to admit, when i saw the kore gui in the komplete 8 pics i knew it wasn't gonna be kore2, but i was hoping that there was some unannounced kore based adaptation in the bundle "Komplex Preset Matrix" or something that worked WITH the controller, but oh well...

In any case i'm like 2 weeks or so new into kore and i'm fascinated with it, I'm also a maschine owner BUT i don't have komplete yet. Of course i want Komplete 8, But i CANNOT NOT know how Kore 2 worked with K7, i would never stop wondering about it. With the lack of info in regards to the upcoming kore updates and K8/Kore clash, looks i'll have to forego K8 for now and get an earlier version then upgrade. If the 2 Kompletes can't work on the same system that means i'll have to do a seperate synth rack pc, which i'm okay with becuz i half intended to do that anyway. But i want kore on my main maschine too, But I'd hate bouncing the controller back and forth. These are my newbie frustrations I can't begin to imagine what kind of issues you long time users are trying to work out

My current boot drive is a Seagate, and I have three of them that one-by-one get rotated into and out of service about every 4-6 months. No problem with any of them. I also have a couple of WD Blacks that I use for backups. I've only had them for a couple of months so it's too soon to say anything except that they haven't failed yet. :)

I did several google searches and found that LaCie has used any number of manufacturers in the past, including Quantum (waaaayyy back when they WERE Quantum), IBM, Hitachi, Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, and probably others.

I have one of their SCSI drives that I still use for storage on my Korg Triton. Love the heavy aluminum case, but it was cheap off of ebay. Would not be likely to buy any brand new LaCie because they're so expensive.

Nicely done. You have acquitted yourself very well with those studies.

I haven't time to process them in depth, but after an initial scanning, my eyes tell me that basically all disks have errors or will get errors, possibly between now and the next time you change your socks. :p

Maybe I should go back to my original feeling that I would prefer to receive Komplete 8 Ultimate on optical discs instead of a hard drive. As I said in the Reaktor thread, I find DVD to be very reliable if you keep them in the original carrier and away from direct sunlight or direct heat.

Since then, the Kore update info page seems to have become a little less featured...

"The update will include the following improvements:

    New and improved features:
    Updated integrated engines
Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" compatibility"

K8 will be more useful for you because it integrates with Maschine so well and so will other NI products be until they screw Maschine owners like they screwed us. If I had too much money I'd also buy older Kompletes, just because I hear so many good things about Spectral Delay, B4II etc. Pro53 might be fun too. It's too bad NI doesn't offer downgrades, lol.

In the download area all koresounds for Komplete5 and 6 are available if you own Komplete7 and Kore2. Maybe you can get all koresounds for Komplete7 if you buy Komplete8 or someone here can give you a copy. These might work because all the samples and synths are there and that would make Kore very useful. Except the samples for Acoustic Refractions of course.

Pretty much, yeah. And most of those different manufacturers don't even exist anymore. Western Digital and Seagate have bought up most of the competition, and I think only Fujitsu is still separate. Hitachi was bought by WD, and Fujitsu bought the drive division of Samsung. Most stores here only stock WD or Seagate, while Fujitsu is popular in cheaper consumer servers.

Scary anecdote 1:I had two Maxtor drives burst into flames in the 90s. Never liked them since, and anecdote 2 proves I was right to not trust them.

Scary anecdote 2: I had three drives of three different brands die within a week. All in one system, so the actual cause was either power or some freaky fault in a component. The Seagate and WD drives exhibited errors, and I could rescue data off them. The Maxtor went "clang" and lasted a few minutes before dying out and having to be powered up again. Recovering 160GB of data was a very tedious process. So Maxtors went extra bad when they went ;)

I had two 250 GB Seagate/Maxtors for about a year and a half. In course of 3 months they suddenly started dying out. I still don't know if I can retrieve the data from them.

Bought a 250 GB WD Blue and it's been rock solid ever since (2 years back). Also bought Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB (one of the fastest, if not the fastest non-SSD 1 TB drive), and it's been rock solid since.

    I'm happy.

It only seems like there are no rules. The problem is, you're playing the game of football as you know it. The ball is still being kicked, but THIS game we're playing doesn't use goalposts.

Well, you talked about the typeface for the 8 being different, but it's the exact same in the pics I posted and a pic from NI's site. The pics are at different angles, but you can clearly see that is the same fonts.

From the pic on NIs site:

From the pic on my site:

    So there you go.

I would buy an SSD drive for that.

I wouldn't use an SSD unless you're connecting it via ESATA or the new Thunderbolt connection. If you use an SSD with something like a USB or Firewire connection then all the data transfer speed is lost via the connection. USB 2 is at 480, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800, well I'm sure you can guess those speeds. This means that a normal disk will still have too much speed for those connections as it is. So spending all your money on an SSD is just the same as giving it all to me for nothing :)

For a normal connection get a Firewire 800 or USB 2. Better yet, take a drive from an old computer, format it and buy a casing that converts it to USB for about 10 or 20 quid.

    Bargin.

Yeah, typical speeds for USB2 are around 40MB/s, with the 60MB/s theoretical maximum being a rare event. USB is known for inconsistent speeds due to sharing a bus with other devices (two ports per chip before you complicate things with hubs), while Firewire is one connection per port. FW800 the fastest common option, while a ridiculously overpriced Thunderbolt RAID cabinet reaches 800MB/s (instead of megabits) :p
I would imagine an SSD could saturate TB :)

A built-in drive or e-SATA should manage 133 to 266MB/s peak with just old SATA and SATA 2.

Yes, I have now seen the announcement. When I first saw the images, I immediately went over to NI website and saw nothing about it, and there was no mention (at the time) that these were adverts from a digital publication. I have seen many a photoshop jobs on rumored products in my day, so that is why I questioned the validity of the images when I fist saw them. My apologies if I came off slightly harsh.
    regards,
    Aaron

Looking at what Komplete 8 has to offer, I am really disappointed that they basically try to force feed all the sample packs to you. I'm really not interested in piano or sampled bass, etc. What I am interested in is the pre installed external disk, effects processors and synths. I already have Komplete 5 so I have most of what I actually need but would be nice to be able to update on what I will use.

I'd prefer to still have the option to just update to Komplete 7.
