With Kontakt 2 I was frequently using the Modwheel X-Fades programs of the VSL strings. Using Kontakt 4's new VSL instruments I don't seem to find them anymore. Where are they?

I too couldn't find them at first. They are under Legacy VSL instruments.

Well, that means the new Kontakt 4 instruments do not support Modwheel X-Fades and I have to stay with the old Kontakt 2 ones.
    Disappointing.

I didn't asked anything, I just wondered why the Kontakt4 VSL orchestra instruments have no x-fade as it is essential.

I DID get that. But you didn't get that if this is the case there is no real use for the nice NEW Kontakt 4 VSL strings as the legacy instruments are identical to the K2 ones AFAIK.
And, as tufftone said, the X-Fade programs are essential if you want to program expressive string pads.

I wonder if they are anticipating the use of AET with those patches, but maybe they didn't finish them yet? Maybe, maybe not. It's just a guess. It does seem strange that they would take it out. I prefer the new performance views and features, so I hope to have the feature back. So I'm going out on a(uninformed) limb to say that we will see an instrument update that uses AET for this instead of x-fade.

    I hope I'm right.

Perhaps you are right Koolkeys, and there will be another instruments update to come. ;)

I'm still waiting in my K4 to arrive, which has been on order for nearly 3 weeks now. :(

I'm new to Kontakt, so please bear with me, but I can't seem to get velocity X-Fading working for Kontakt 4 Legacy VSL instruments. Everything I've tried uses simple note velocity.

(In the DB browser, I have Instr hilighted, Bank VSL Legacy selected, and it gives me instrument names for individual articulations, like "Bass (sustain)".)

Are the presets configured to do this, or is there an option somewhere I'd need to turn on? It's the mod-wheel / CC1 that triggers this, right?

I have VSL SE and love it, but for a few reasons I'd like to be able to use Kontakt VSL patches as well.

Come on NI, gives us Modwheel fade in the new instruments... or at least a knob to fade within the different velocity layers.
