Kontakt Mac w/G5 duals for EWQLSO plat ?

Hi,

Does the latest version of Kontakt / Kompakt for the Mac take advantage of the dual processor architechrture ?

I am interested in using the latest version of Kontakt with the EWQLSO Platinum adition library on a Mac dual G5 , any feedback on Mac G5 ( dual 2.0) or (dual 2.5) users experience with this library ?

How efficient is the streaming from disc in Kontakt / Kompakt ?

I know there were some software issues in the past as far as the Mac is concerned, which did not make Kontakt an ideal sample steaming application , but have heard that things are much better now with the latest version of Kontakt, and Kompakt, as far as efficiency, and stability on the Mac is concerned, any feedback on this topic will be very helpful.

I plan to run EWQLSO Plat, Edition on a G5 dual w/ 4.5 Gigs of RAM, as a stand alone, a second G5 dual will be running Logic 6 pro, some VSL Pro Edition (Exs 24mkII), and EWQLSO Plat. Edition.

I hope to be able to get four instances of the Kompakt player (32 instrumnets on the stand alone, which will most likely be running Cubase SE. or V-Stack by Steinberg, to allow for multiple instances of Kompakt.

The main G5 dual will run Logic pro 6, As far as the stability of Kompakt /Kontakt I guess things look good for now, but streaming efficiency as you mentioned can be improved, well, I guess that is something N.I. will have to do to the coding/algorithms of the Kompakt/kontakt streaming engine to be more efficient, and fast,

The utilization of the dual processors on the G5 is quite important for efficient and smooth steaming from disc, since Kontakt/Kompakt seem to use the dual processors this is good news, and maybe it is the manner in which it utilizes the dual processors that N.I. can increase the streaming from disc efficiency in a future update. This type of improved efficiency is something that companies like Audio Ease, has been able to give users of Altiverb, via update (not free) but it basically almost doubled the efficiency of the application.

You do not need to buy 4.5 GB because all APPS in 10.3 can only use a
maximum of 2 GB. 2.5 GB is enough for the moment (.5 GB for MAC OS and
2 GB for Logic of Cubase

If you can get Kontakt it is better, you have 16 slots at once. Less
you have instance of the player better it is (NI dixit )

Depending of your DFD settings you will be able to load "so many
instruments" ; this is very tricky ; I have spend hours of
experimentation ; I have ask to NI to write a routine that will
calculate your DFD settings automatically ; waiting !!! (the EXS24 is
doing this very well)

The setting of my "orchestral desktop" song is made of 5 instance of
Kontakt
The program I use are "the best multi" and missing instruments (it"s a
bit a mess with the multi because you will not have the same
articulations for a Violin, a Viola and a Cello, it"s not VSL !!!)
So I have build an Environment in Logic, it"s purpose is to have a FULL
orchestra under your fingers with major articulation :
- I use Program changes instead of key switches to change articulation,
so
- you do not need to remember the note use for the key switches
- the note that are used does not display when you print the score
- you see in the event edit window the name in clear of the
articulation changes you are using
- I have tried to have the same articulations for a family of instrument

I have a Kontakt instrument for the :
String it is using 14 midi channels
Winds it is using 14 midi channels
Brass it is using 14 midi channels
Percussion it is using 13 midi channels
Solo and Ensemble it is using 9 midi channels

I have also made the environment using the QLSO/Kompakt player !

Thank You for the additional information.

Yes, I can live with 2.5 GBs of RAM (and save some $$), but I think things will change in the near future, as far as access to more RAM capability in the new Apple O.S. Tiger, so, maybe I can add more RAM later.

You mentioned that you are able to get five instances of Kontakt on the G5 2X2, that is very good, so, you are triggering the G5 via the G4 that is running Logic.

Q) what are you using as a host application on the G5 2X2 to open up five instances of Kontakt ? Logic, V-Stack, Cusbase LE, ..etc.

I would like to use a host application that is very stable, and simple to use, any recommendations ? (I have one license of Logic 6 Pro, which I will be using on the master computer, I don't intend to buy a second license for Logic Pro 6, but maybe Logic Express 6, is another option, other possible applications ... any thoughts ?

As far creating Logic Environments, I am very new to Logic, actually a DP4 user, but I decided to add Logic 6 in order to take advantage of the VSL Library, so, it is going to take some time to learn Logic (currently studying the manual), but regarding the above quote, I am kind of confused, but I guess you are referring to an environment you created on the G4 (master computer) that is triggering the G5 that has the EWQLSO onboard, or is this not the case ?

Well, I guess I will have to experiment a bit, maybe N.I. can recommend some settings.

And finally, I know this is Off topic, but I am also interested in using some of VSL pro with EWQLSO Plat, which VSL Pro , or Horizon series titles do you think would complement EWQLSO Plat the best ?

instruments of the orchestra. I convert program numbers to key switches

on this i cannot help, you better go on the VSL forum, or may be there
is another user that has QLSO and VSL, I dont !

This is nothing, because of false informations given on the E/W forum
by an incompetent, users went and bought memory and disks for there G5,
that did not help them at all, as at that time QLSO was unusable on MAC
with Logic, hopefully this now much better.

I was you I will start with one G5 2x2.5 2.5 GB of memory 2 SATA disk
build in a RAID 0. you can buy the second G5 later, if you do not
manage to do what you want

The problem today is you need to use Softraid to partition the Raid 0,
but Softraid does not allow today to boot on a partitionned RAID 0, you
need another disk to boot. (the solution is another Sata disk with a
Sata card or an external FW 800 disk) I have 2 FW800 disk !!!

Softraid has announce since January a bootable raid 0 !!! I am in
contact with them since many years (I was using Softraid on a G4 400)
they told me that they are in contact with Apple, and Apple has to
change something so it is working,
I wrote to Softraid a few days ago to have fresh new, no answer !!!
(they are in copy)
