Could there be a reduced bitrate mode for playback, and the full 24 bit mode bounce switch for rendering?

This could help conserve RAM when loading big patches.

    Probably not feasible.

This is just my assumption: the full patches still have to be loaded in their entirety, then downsampled (requiring extra time or hard drive space), plus it wouldn't sound as good, so I doubt many users would be willing to put up with this workaround.

Better solution: more RAM and faster hard drives. :) Neither are too expensive.

Bitrate reduction doesn't involve resampling. Its just a truncation.

Puranon You would still have to load full sample in order to truncate it, so it would require MORE CPU because it was trying to do this in real-time?

EDIT: I just realised I'm paraphrasing David.

Possible Solution: You could do what some manufacturers do and set yourself a low-resolution version with dithered down waveforms that you use for playing. Then switch to the high-resolution version when you are ready to render.

Of course the downside to this is it would take up more space on your HD having two version of everything.

Possible Solution 2: You could just upgrade. :p

Well, normally audio is transported in 32bit within your host. It is unlikely that a processing within Kontakt with less than 32bit would be any faster, as OS is 32bit ....

The only thing you can save is disk space - do not think you can save RAM - is there a RAM usage difference between a 16bit and a 24bit library? Do not know ....

    just my thoughts
    best

you can't upgrade past 4GB RAM on a 32bit System.

64bit still has compatibility issues with too many VSTI outside of NI.

Fxpansion BFD has this 16bit option. Very useful for 32bit systems.
