The solution that people have found to this problem is to update Windows 7 to SP1. However, for some reason, when I try to install SP1 I get an error preventing installation (components that the service pack requires are missing), so I can't do that without a complete system format. Has anyone found a way of running the new versions of Kontakt on Windows 7 x64 vanilla?

Just so you know, I'm all up to date on my runtime libraries, and my computer does in fact have the correct dll's.

    Thanks.

These are the first things that come to mind that maybe will fix the SP1 problem are:
    1-maybe you got a bad SP1 download?
2-is anything running in the background, i.e. anti-virus, anti-spyware etc.
3-try an OS repair just prior to installing SP1
4-a possible virus or malware - do you have Malwarebytes anti-malware, if so run it in safe mode- if not get the free version

If you have already done these than I'm sorry for the redundancy.

Yeah, I tried. I was told the problem is due to CCleaner removing things it shouldn't have. I have no active background services like those.

The problem is that the OS "repair" necessary to fix it is actually a complete re-installation of the Windows directory, making a lot of software useless. As a working composer currently in his busy season, I just don't have time to reinstall all my software and troubleshoot my OS when I have so much work to do.

    Thanks for your help!

Am I right in assuming you used CCleaner's registry cleaner and you did not save a copy of the registry prior to cleaning? Or that you did not do a system restore point and/or a complete C:/ drive backup also?

No automatically-created System Restore Points to which you could return? (But I'm not sure that that would recover deleted system components).

Why would the Windows reinstall make the software useless? Would you not just reinstall / reauthorise the software products too? Reinstall may be you only option

And, please, please, especially as your business relies on your computer, go out an buy 2 external disks and some Disk Imaging backup software. so that you can back up your system to those disks (alternately) and be able to recover from any future hiccoughs.

I just did a google/bing search and the official word from MS is that a Win 7 system repair MAY make SOME applications unavailable and that you would have to reinstall those programs. I didn't know that.

Rocketmorton, Dark Star is correct. I have Acronis for imaging back ups. I have two external HDs that store those backups and I am only a hobbyist. I have one of those backups off the premises so if something catastrophic happens I am still protected. If this was my business I might even have more backups.

    Good luck.

I appreciate what you guys are saying and yes, I do keep thorough backups. This isn't a case where rolling back my OS is feasible. I am still able to use Kontakt 5.3.1 which is compatible with all of my libraries except Damage and Grandeur. I would like to use Damage and Grandeur obviously, but IT IS NOT WORTH messing with my operating system just for two sample libraries. Anything could go wrong and then I'd be up s**t creek. I just want a way to use Kontakt 5.4.1 and above on Windows 7 x64 vanilla. I've heard a few people got it to work by messing with DLL's and permissions, but no one I've talked to remembers exactly how they achieved it step by step.
