It would mean that buying the downloadable extended ONLY is impossible

nope, and you can't buy the dvd for the extended libraries only either. you need the standard libraries before you can get the extended libraries :)

It is interesting if there is an upgrade possible from VSL Kontakt Edition to something bigger?

Is that because of the different engines?

It's because VSL considers the VSL instruments in the Kontakt library a teaser.

Pretty much. Plus, the VSL library in Kontakt is a far cry from what you get with the Vienna Instruments player.

Typically the VSL customer considers buying articulations totally worth it. If you do not know what they are for, probably you would not. VSL is not really an entry level type of product, people go for it that know a bit about what they want from orchestral instruments.

The Kontakt VSL samples are not 'already put through reverb', you enable the reverb with a switch and there is basic control of it on that page of the interface. That reverb is made for the VSL Libraries and is a good reverb for the purpose.

At the time Niels was writing, VI Pro had only an algo reverb capability. Now, there is an add-on called MIR-X which is taken from MIR. I use VSL Hybrid Reverb from Vienna Suite, which is a bundle of 'mastering' FX which isn't the cheapest although I would say it's a very good buy.

Yes. VSL moved to their own engine some years ago. For a time there was an upgrade available from their Kontakt products to the Vienna Instrument version of a product but they dropped that several years ago. And as Niels said, the Kontakt Factory Library VSL is just a taste, a promotional device and isn't actually any VSL purchase. Just as there is no upgrade available from the other demo-level inclusions (albeit VSL is the only vendor identified as such).
