I'm not sure I understand exactly your question but:
    - the step sequencer mappings are for a specific deck each and run in user mode (or midi I suppose), but you can only run one of this mapping (so you have to choose a deck to act as a step sequencer).
    - That doesn't mean you can't go back to the native mapping as usual and switch which deck your F1 controls (note however that won't change the step sequencer mapping itself, it will still be dedicated to the deck you chose in the first place when you imported the mapping).

    Does that make sense?

Thanks for the reply! Makes sense. basically, I can only use one deck as a step sequencer.

I was hoping there was a way to run 2 decks as step sequencers at the same time and be able to switch decks easily from the F1 while in user mode, controlling both step sequencers with one controller...if that makes sense!

yes it makes sense so to be precise:
    - you can't switch from a user/midi mapping to another one 'on the fly'
    - you can probably take one of the mapping provided by NI, duplicate all the commands inside that mapping and affect them correctly to a deck (and all settings), sacrifice one button to act as a toggle modifier between two decks. I don't think the step sequencer mappings use a lot of modifiers (as far as I remember, may be 2 or 3 so that leaves you room to adapt something). I never done it as it's a pain in the ass to create but I guess It's doable.

But to be fair don't really bother: if you need a second step sequencer, have a dedicated set of controls for it. For example you probably have an android or ios phone or even a tablet maybe, just buy touch osc for a few dollars/euros (less than 10) and create your controller on the touch device. It's very easy to set (and touch osc is SO powerful for a low price).
Don't try to have an abstruse workflow where the number of layers and complex things you set up in the end don't serve you as they open you to so many pitfalls and errors.
My two cents. Good luck whatever solution you choose.

I made a mapping for all decks with the Djtechtools Midifighter Twister.
It was an insane process that took about 4 months.
The hardest part was the led feedback.
Even just choosing colors was insane.
The reason i didn't try with the F1 was the midi mode didn't support all the colors. If i remember correctly.

Check out new "Indexed" LED option in the Controller Editor. It allows you to set all colors via the velocity values like every other controler with RGB button support.

    Ahh cool.
I haven't done much with mapping lately, just revamping my Twister for some missing S4mk3 features.
I will definitely check it out.
